  • Reliability (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
Dodge's reliability scores are generally average. While the Challenger's powertrains are proven, some owners report minor electrical or trim issues over time.
  • Maintenance (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
Maintenance costs for the Challenger are fairly typical for a V8-powered performance car. Parts are readily available, but specialized components for higher-performance trims can be more expensive.
  • Technology (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
The Uconnect infotainment system is user-friendly and responsive, but the overall technology suite feels a bit dated compared to newer rivals. Essential features are present, but advanced driver-assist systems are not as comprehensive.
  • Comfort (4)
    4 out of 5 stars
The Challenger boasts a surprisingly comfortable ride for a performance coupe, with well-cushioned seats and ample interior space for front passengers. Rear legroom is limited, but it's more spacious than many competitors.
  • Dynamics (4)
    4 out of 5 stars
The 2022 Dodge Challenger offers strong straight-line performance, especially with V8 engines. While not as agile as some rivals, it handles well for its size and delivers a classic muscle car driving experience.

2022 Dodge Challenger: A Detailed Overview

The 2022 Dodge Challenger continues its legacy as a retro-inspired muscle car that prioritizes powerful performance, bold styling, and a driver-focused experience. It remains a compelling choice for those seeking a V8-powered icon with modern amenities.

Highlights

  • Engine Options: The heart of the Challenger's appeal lies in its robust engine lineup.
    • 3.6L Pentastar V6: The standard engine offers a respectable 303 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, providing a capable and efficient daily driver experience for the V6 models.
    • 5.7L HEMI V8: Introducing the iconic HEMI, this engine delivers 372 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, offering a significant step up in performance and that classic V8 rumble.
    • 6.4L HEMI V8: Found in the R/T Scat Pack and SRT models, this powerhouse churns out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, delivering exhilarating acceleration.
    • Supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8: Exclusive to the SRT Hellcat and its variants (Redeye, Super Stock), this supercharged beast unleashes a staggering 717 horsepower (or more in specific variants), offering supercar-rivaling performance.
  • Safety Features: While not its primary focus, the Challenger offers a suite of available safety and driver-assistance technologies.
    • Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Path Detection: These systems alert the driver to vehicles in their blind spots, enhancing awareness during lane changes and when backing up.
    • Adaptive Cruise Control: This feature automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed to maintain a set distance from the car ahead, reducing driver fatigue on long journeys.
    • Forward Collision Warning: Provides visual and audible alerts if a potential frontal collision is detected, allowing the driver to react.
    • ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera: Aids in reversing by displaying a wide-angle view of the area behind the vehicle.
  • Trim Summary: The 2022 Challenger is offered in a wide array of trims, each catering to different levels of performance and luxury.
    • SXT: The entry-level trim, offering the Pentastar V6 engine, a comfortable interior, and essential features.
    • GT: Builds upon the SXT with a sportier appearance package and enhanced interior features.
    • R/T: Introduces the 5.7L HEMI V8 for a taste of true muscle car power, along with unique styling cues.
    • R/T Scat Pack: Elevates performance with the 6.4L HEMI V8, upgraded brakes, and a performance-oriented suspension.
    • SRT Hellcat: The legendary supercharged HEMI makes its debut, offering immense power and aggressive styling.
    • SRT Hellcat Redeye: Further amplifies the Hellcat's power with even higher horsepower figures and additional performance enhancements.
    • SRT Super Stock: The pinnacle of the Challenger lineup, boasting the most powerful engine output and track-focused features for ultimate performance.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Iconic Styling: The Challenger's retro design, reminiscent of the classic 1970 Challengers, is a major draw, with its long hood, aggressive grille, and muscular proportions.
    • Spacious Interior: Compared to some rivals, the Challenger offers a surprisingly roomy cabin, especially for front-seat occupants, and a usable rear seat.
    • Uconnect Infotainment System: Dodge's Uconnect system is user-friendly and offers features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
    • Available All-Wheel Drive (AWD): The SXT and GT trims offer an optional AWD system, enhancing traction and making the Challenger a more viable option in diverse weather conditions.

What to Expect

Owning a 2022 Dodge Challenger is typically an experience characterized by exhilarating drives and a strong connection to automotive heritage. The V8 models, in particular, offer a visceral driving experience with potent acceleration and a commanding exhaust note. Daily usability is also a strong point, with comfortable seating for front occupants and a relatively compliant ride for a performance car, especially in V6 and R/T trims.

Maintenance: Routine maintenance will be comparable to other vehicles with large displacement engines. Expect oil changes, filter replacements, and tire rotations. The HEMI V8 engines, while robust, may have slightly higher costs for specialized fluids or parts compared to smaller engines. For the supercharged Hellcat models, more frequent checks and specific maintenance procedures related to the supercharger system may be recommended by Dodge.

Insurance: Insurance premiums for the 2022 Challenger, especially for the higher-performance V8 models, will likely be higher than for a typical sedan or compact car. This is due to the vehicle's power, its classification as a performance car, and the potential cost of repairs for more potent engines and components. Drivers with a history of speeding tickets or accidents may face significantly higher premiums.

Potential Considerations

While the Challenger excels in many areas, there are a few potential drawbacks buyers should be aware of.

  • Rear Visibility: The Challenger's styling, with its relatively narrow windows and thick C-pillars, can compromise rearward visibility. This makes features like the rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring particularly valuable.
  • Fuel Economy: Unsurprisingly, the V8 engines, especially the supercharged variants, are not fuel-efficient. Buyers should be prepared for higher fuel costs, particularly if they opt for the more powerful models and frequently utilize their performance capabilities.
  • Handling Limitations: While capable, the Challenger is a large and heavy car. While it handles well for its size, it doesn't offer the same agility or nimbleness as some smaller, lighter sports cars. Cornering at the limit can feel less precise.
  • Interior Refinement: While the interior is well-appointed and functional, some critics note that the materials and overall refinement might not match the luxury expectations of some premium sports coupes, especially in lower trims.

Overall Summary

The 2022 Dodge Challenger stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the American muscle car. It offers a potent blend of retro styling, powerful engine options ranging from capable V6 to monstrous supercharged V8s, and a surprisingly practical interior. While its fuel economy and certain handling characteristics might not appeal to everyone, for those seeking a car with a commanding presence, exhilarating performance, and a deep connection to automotive history, the Challenger remains a compelling and desirable choice. It's a car that prioritizes passion and power, delivering an undeniably engaging driving experience.
