2019 Buick LaCrosse: A Detailed Overview

The 2019 Buick LaCrosse represented the twilight of a well-regarded, albeit niche, player in the midsize sedan segment. It continued to offer a blend of comfort, refinement, and modern technology, positioning itself as a more mature and sophisticated alternative to its rivals. While not a sales giant, the LaCrosse cultivated a loyal following for its quiet ride and well-appointed interior.

Highlights

  • Powertrain: The 2019 LaCrosse offered a choice between two capable powertrains:
    • Standard 3.6L V6 Engine: This naturally aspirated powerhouse delivered a smooth and responsive 310 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. It was paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, providing seamless gear changes and contributing to a refined driving experience.
    • Optional 2.5L eAssist Mild-Hybrid System (FWD Only): For those prioritizing fuel efficiency, this system combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a small battery. It provided an estimated 198 horsepower and offered improved MPG ratings, particularly in city driving, while still maintaining a comfortable and quiet ride.
  • Safety Features: The 2019 LaCrosse was equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance technologies designed to enhance awareness and prevent accidents. Key features included:
    • Automatic Emergency Braking: This system uses sensors to detect potential frontal collisions and can automatically apply the brakes if the driver doesn't react in time, helping to mitigate or avoid impact.
    • Forward Collision Alert: Provides audible and visual warnings when a potential front-end collision is detected, giving the driver time to react.
    • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning: This feature uses a camera to monitor lane markings. Lane Departure Warning alerts the driver if they drift out of their lane without signaling, while Lane Keep Assist can gently steer the vehicle back into its lane.
    • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert: When backing out of a parking space, this system alerts the driver to approaching vehicles from either side, improving visibility and preventing collisions.
    • Blind Spot Monitoring: Detects vehicles in the vehicle's blind spots and provides a visual alert in the side mirror, helping to prevent dangerous lane changes.
    • Adaptive Cruise Control: This system automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed to maintain a set following distance from the car ahead, reducing driver fatigue on highways.
  • Trim Levels: The 2019 LaCrosse was available in three distinct trims, each offering a progressive increase in luxury and features:
    • LaCrosse (Base): This entry-level trim provided a strong foundation of comfort and technology, including a user-friendly infotainment system and essential safety features.
    • LaCrosse Touring: Stepping up, the Touring trim added more premium amenities such as enhanced interior materials, a more sophisticated suspension system for an even smoother ride, and additional convenience features.
    • LaCrosse Essence: The top-tier Essence trim offered the most luxurious experience, typically including features like perforated leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, a premium Bose audio system, and more advanced driver-assistance technologies as standard.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Quiet Cabin: Buick's signature QuietTuning technology was a standout feature, employing sound-deadening materials and active noise cancellation to create an exceptionally serene and hushed interior environment, ideal for long journeys.
    • Comfortable Ride: The LaCrosse prioritized a comfortable and composed ride, effortlessly gliding over rough surfaces thanks to its well-tuned suspension.
    • Spacious Interior: The cabin offered ample space for both front and rear passengers, with comfortable seating and a generous trunk for cargo.
    • User-Friendly Infotainment: Buick's IntelliLink infotainment system was intuitive and easy to use, featuring a touchscreen interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

What to Expect

Owning a 2019 Buick LaCrosse is generally characterized by a relaxed and comfortable experience. The emphasis is on effortless cruising and a tranquil cabin environment. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements, is typically straightforward and aligned with industry standards for midsize sedans. Buick's reliability has generally been solid, meaning major mechanical issues are not a common concern for well-maintained examples.

Insurance costs for the 2019 LaCrosse would generally fall within the midsize sedan range. Factors influencing premiums would include the specific trim level, chosen powertrain, location of the owner, driving record, and chosen insurance coverage. The advanced safety features might even contribute to slightly lower premiums with some insurers.

Potential Considerations

While the 2019 Buick LaCrosse offers many desirable qualities, buyers should be aware of a few potential considerations:

  • Less Engaging Driving Dynamics: For those who prioritize sporty handling and a connected driving feel, the LaCrosse might feel a bit too soft and detached. Its focus is undeniably on comfort rather than spirited driving.
  • Aging Design (for some): While elegant, the LaCrosse's design had been in production for a few years, and some buyers might find it less contemporary compared to newer, more aggressively styled competitors.
  • Limited Rear Visibility (for some): The sloping roofline and thick C-pillars, while contributing to the LaCrosse's sleek profile, can sometimes impede rearward visibility, especially for taller drivers. The standard rearview camera and available surround-view cameras are essential aids.
  • V6 Engine's Fuel Economy: While the V6 is powerful, its fuel economy figures are not as competitive as some turbocharged four-cylinder engines offered by rivals. The eAssist model addresses this, but with a slight compromise in outright power.

Overall Summary

The 2019 Buick LaCrosse was a competent and comfortable midsize sedan that excelled in providing a quiet, refined, and well-appointed driving experience. It appealed to buyers seeking a more mature and sophisticated option, prioritizing a smooth ride and an array of modern safety and convenience technologies. While not the most exciting or dynamic car in its class, its strengths in comfort, quietness, and overall luxury made it a solid choice for those who valued a serene journey above all else.
