2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible Much of the credit for this convertible's civilized behavior goes to GM's Magnetic Ride Control. Like the coupe, the drop top ZL1 uses the third generation system, which features twin wire, dual coil dampers at all four corners for faster response. Chevrolet says the setup can adjust damping levels up to 1000 times per second, which equals roughly one adjustment per inch of vehicle travel at 60 mph. Exterior A rather sinister shade of blue adorns this pony car, dubbed Blue Ray Metallic by GM, an absolute perfect complement to the black features of the car which includes the upper grille, lower gaping grille, fog light bezels, and front air dam. It looks pretty good with the carbon fiber too, most notably on the hood heat extractor vent and cowl. Black wheels and a black canvas top complete the palette while the tail lights are rimmed in chrome, a nice match with the quad polished tips below, all under the subtle spoiler. Tires are staggered on the 20-inch wheels, but all of them are ZR rated and no older than the mid 2020 date code. Imperfections include a few minor scuffs and scratches and some typical chin scrapes. Interior The door panels are dressed a little nicer than your typical Camaro of the era with piano black inserts, red stitched black leather on the armrests, and integrated switchgear and speakers. That red stitched leather also surrounds suede inserts on the bucket seats and just as a reminder, ZL1 is embroidered into each headrest while rear passengers get a more understated but attractive 2+2 configuration in the same materials. A suede steering wheel fronts the square bezeled round backlit gauges with center info screen and underscored by red stitched suede that flows the width of the dash. A center screen relays info from the MyLink system and XM, Bluetooth, AM/FM/CD player, and of course, navigation and backup camera. A throwback to the Z28's Rally pack of gauges in the center console in front of the shifter with, yes, more red stitching! Low pile black carpet covers the floor and the small trunk is clean and fully finished with carpet and plastic panels. Drivetrain The heart of the beast is a 6.2 liter supercharged LSA V8 pumping out 580 horsepower and mated to a 6L90E 6-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the rear axle, of course, where it meets 3.23 gears and Positraction. The plastic shroud on the engine flexes its supercharged endowment and tops a clean engine bay. Undercarriage Clean surfaces and nothing out of place underneath. We have dual exhaust traveling through original equipment and Brembo power disc brakes on all four wheels. The magnetic ride control is accompanied by Macpherson struts in front and multi link suspension on the rear independent set up. Drive-Ability No surprises here on a car that meets our expectations for sheer power, race-like cockpit, and handling that's off the charts good. Our low mileage example does it all, and every bell and whistle operates as it should on this well equipped Camaro. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. With less than 8,000 ZL1s in 2013, and less than 2,000 of them convertibles, this one represents a fairly rare example and was highly touted in '13 for good reason.
