* Based on opinions and should be considered as general guidance only.

  • Reliability (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
Generally considered a reliable vehicle for its age, but some owners have reported issues with the transmission and electrical components over time.
  • Maintenance (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
Parts are generally affordable and readily available. Routine maintenance is straightforward, but some repairs might be more complex due to the vehicle's unique design.
  • Technology (2)
    2 out of 5 stars
The infotainment system is basic by today's standards, with a small screen and limited features. Bluetooth connectivity is available, but it lacks modern smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • Comfort (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
Front seats are reasonably comfortable for short to medium trips. Rear seating can be a bit cramped for adults, and road noise can become noticeable at highway speeds.
  • Dynamics (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
The HHR LT offers a decent ride for city driving, but acceleration can feel sluggish, especially with the automatic transmission. Handling is predictable but not particularly engaging.

2010 Chevrolet HHR: A Detailed Overview

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR (Heritage High Roof) continued to offer a unique blend of retro styling, practical cargo space, and versatile utility in the compact segment. Building on its distinctive looks inspired by the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban, the HHR aimed to provide a comfortable and functional vehicle for a variety of lifestyles.

Highlights

  • Engine Options: The 2010 HHR offered two distinct engine choices:

    • 2.0L Ecotec I4: This standard engine provided adequate power for daily driving and city commuting, delivering a balanced performance.
    • 2.4L Ecotec I4: Available on higher trims and as an option on others, this more potent engine offered increased horsepower and torque, enhancing acceleration and highway passing ability. It was particularly notable in the sportier HHR SS variant.
  • Safety Features: Chevrolet equipped the 2010 HHR with a suite of standard and available safety features designed to protect occupants:

    • Front-Seat Airbags: Standard dual-stage frontal airbags provided supplemental restraint for the driver and front passenger in the event of a collision.
    • Side-Curtain Airbags: Standard roof-mounted side-curtain airbags offered head protection for front and rear outboard occupants.
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): This system prevented wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and reduce stopping distances on slippery surfaces.
    • Traction Control System (TCS): Standard on most models, TCS helped prevent wheel slippage during acceleration by reducing engine power or applying brakes to spinning wheels, improving stability.
    • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Available on certain trims, ESC could detect and help correct skidding or loss of traction by applying individual brakes and reducing engine power, further enhancing vehicle stability.
  • Trim Summary: The 2010 Chevrolet HHR was offered in several well-defined trims, each catering to different priorities:

    • LS: The entry-level trim provided essential comfort and convenience features, making it an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.
    • 1LT: Stepping up from the LS, the 1LT trim added a more refined interior and a few extra amenities for enhanced comfort and convenience.
    • 2LT: This mid-range trim offered a more premium experience with additional features like upgraded upholstery, improved audio systems, and sometimes enhanced powertrain options.
    • SS (Super Sport): The performance-oriented SS trim stood out with its turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension, unique exterior styling cues, and enhanced interior appointments, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a more engaging driving experience.
  • Other Notable Aspects:

    • Unique Styling: The HHR's retro-inspired, upright design was a significant draw, giving it a distinct presence on the road that differentiated it from more conventional compact cars and crossovers.
    • Versatile Cargo Space: Despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions, the HHR boasted a surprisingly spacious and flexible interior. The 60/40-split rear seat could be folded flat, creating a cavernous cargo area ideal for hauling groceries, gear, or even small furniture.
    • "Reconfigurable Passenger Seat" (Optional): On some models, the front passenger seat could also be folded flat, allowing for exceptionally long items to be carried, extending the HHR's utility.
    • Comfortable Ride: The HHR generally offered a comfortable and compliant ride, making it well-suited for daily commuting and longer journeys.

What to Expect

Owning a 2010 Chevrolet HHR typically involves a predictable ownership experience for a vehicle of its age and segment. Maintenance is generally straightforward, with parts readily available and most routine services (oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs) being manageable for independent mechanics. The Ecotec engines are known for their reliability, but like any vehicle from this era, regular maintenance is key to longevity.

Insurance costs for the 2010 HHR are typically moderate, falling within the average range for compact cars and crossovers. Factors such as driver demographics, coverage levels, and geographic location will influence the final premium. The HHR's safety features and its overall market position contribute to its generally reasonable insurance rates.

Potential Considerations

While the 2010 HHR offers many advantages, potential buyers should be aware of a few common considerations:

  • Interior Materials: While functional, some of the interior plastics and materials could feel a bit basic or less refined compared to some competitors.
  • Road Noise: Depending on the trim level and tire choice, some road and wind noise can be noticeable at highway speeds, which is not uncommon for vehicles in this class from that period.
  • Rear Visibility: The HHR's somewhat upright and blocky design, coupled with its rear pillars, could slightly compromise rear visibility, making the backup camera (if equipped) a valuable feature.
  • SS Model Specifics: The performance-oriented SS model, while exciting, might have slightly higher maintenance costs associated with its turbocharged engine and performance-tuned components.

Overall Summary

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR presented a compelling option for those seeking a practical, stylish, and versatile compact vehicle. Its distinctive retro styling, ample cargo space, and comfortable ride made it a solid choice for individuals and small families. With a range of trims to suit different needs and budgets, and a generally predictable ownership experience, the HHR offered a unique proposition in a competitive market.
