Message from the seller

For those of you perusing this ad, my guess is that you already know about this extremely limited production car. To our knowledge, one of only a few built with automatic transmission. We were told only three were made in this color. The ultimate specialty car builder, Panoz is well known for their racing success and special interest street cars. Built near Atlanta Georgia, the Esperante was their most successful road model, blending outrageous styling with reliable Ford based driveline components. Lightweight aluminum construction. Aircraft style cockpit with full leather seating. With over 300HP, the car is an excellent performer that is equally at home cruising the boulevard as it is on twisty back roads. For those of you interested in a manual five or six speed conversion, the folks at Panoz have a transmission swap available. This is a stunningly beautiful car offered at a special price. 2006 was the final year for production, and arguably one of the finest, low mile examples to be found anywhere. Please call to discuss this incredible performance car.

2006 Panoz Esperante

The 2006 Panoz Esperante represented a unique and relatively exclusive offering in the sports car market, catering to discerning enthusiasts seeking a blend of American muscle and sophisticated European-inspired styling. Built by Panoz Auto Development, a company known for its motorsport heritage and boutique approach to automotive manufacturing, the Esperante was a hand-built, rear-wheel-drive roadster designed to deliver a thrilling and engaging driving experience.

Highlights

  • Engine: The 2006 Esperante was powered by a potent 4.6L Ford Mustang Cobra-sourced V8 engine. This naturally aspirated mill produced a robust 305 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This provided ample power for spirited acceleration and a satisfying V8 soundtrack. While not the most powerful engine in its class, it offered a strong and reliable performance package.
  • Safety Features: While a performance-oriented car, the Esperante didn't completely neglect safety. It typically came equipped with:
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): This system prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and reduce stopping distances on slippery surfaces.
    • Driver and Passenger Airbags: Standard front airbags provided crucial occupant protection in the event of a frontal collision.
    • Front and Rear Crumple Zones: The chassis was designed with specific areas intended to absorb and dissipate impact energy in a crash, protecting the passenger cabin.
    • Roll Hoop/Bar: As a convertible, a reinforced roll hoop or bar was integrated into the chassis design to provide protection in case of a rollover.
  • Trims: For the 2006 model year, the Panoz Esperante was primarily offered in a single, well-equipped configuration, effectively acting as the Esperante GT. This meant that most of the desirable features were standard, simplifying the buying decision. This single trim level emphasized its focused performance and luxury orientation.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Hand-Built Quality: Each Panoz Esperante was meticulously hand-built by skilled artisans, contributing to its bespoke feel and attention to detail.
    • Aluminum Superplastic Formed Body Panels: Panoz utilized advanced manufacturing techniques, including superplastic forming of aluminum, to create the car's distinctive and lightweight bodywork.
    • Race-Inspired Chassis: The chassis was derived from Panoz's motorsport experience, offering excellent rigidity and handling characteristics.
    • Convertible Design: The Esperante's open-top, two-seater roadster configuration was central to its appeal, offering an uncompromised driving connection to the road and the environment.
    • Unique Styling: The Esperante possessed a bold and somewhat polarizing design, characterized by its flowing lines, distinctive headlights, and aggressive stance, setting it apart from more mainstream sports cars.

What to Expect

Owning a 2006 Panoz Esperante is an experience for the enthusiast who appreciates a blend of performance, style, and exclusivity. Expect a car that rewards the driver with sharp handling and responsive acceleration. The driving position is low and engaging, offering excellent visibility of the road ahead. The V8 engine provides a satisfying growl under acceleration.

Maintenance: As a limited-production, hand-built vehicle, maintenance for the Panoz Esperante can be more specialized than for mass-produced cars. While the Ford-sourced V8 engine and transmission are generally reliable, finding mechanics experienced with Panoz vehicles may require some research. Routine maintenance items like oil changes, filter replacements, and brake services will be similar to other performance cars. However, any repairs involving the bespoke bodywork, suspension components, or specialized electrical systems might necessitate going to a Panoz specialist or a reputable performance shop willing to work on unique vehicles. Parts availability for these less common components could also be a consideration, potentially requiring longer lead times or custom orders.

Insurance: Insurance for a 2006 Panoz Esperante will likely be higher than for a typical sedan or even a more common sports car. This is due to its limited production numbers, higher replacement cost, performance capabilities, and potentially higher repair costs. Insurers may view it as a higher-risk vehicle due to its performance nature and the specialized parts required for repairs. Obtaining quotes from insurers familiar with specialty vehicles is recommended.

Potential Considerations

  • Limited Production & Parts Availability: As a niche vehicle, finding replacement parts, especially for unique body panels or interior components, might be more challenging and potentially more expensive than for mainstream manufacturers. This requires a proactive owner who is willing to research and source parts.
  • Specialized Maintenance: While the core mechanicals are relatively robust, the specialized nature of a hand-built car means not every mechanic will be comfortable or knowledgeable working on it. Finding a trusted specialist is key to ensuring proper upkeep.
  • Ride Comfort: The Esperante prioritizes performance, and as such, the ride can be firm. It's a sports car designed for spirited driving, so occupants should expect a more direct and less forgiving ride than in a luxury GT car.
  • Interior Practicality: As a two-seater roadster, practicality is limited. Trunk space is minimal, and interior storage is at a premium, typical for this type of vehicle.

Overall Summary

The 2006 Panoz Esperante is a compelling choice for those seeking a distinctive and engaging American sports car with a touch of exclusivity. Its potent V8, engaging handling, and hand-built quality offer a rewarding driving experience. While potential owners should be prepared for the specialized nature of maintenance and potentially higher ownership costs, the Esperante provides a unique proposition for those who value individuality and performance over mainstream appeal. It's a car that truly stands out from the crowd.
