Message from the seller

Very nice low mileage gas saver that I would drive anywhere. This car barely has any miles and the motor with a 2.2 L is nearly indestructible. One of the best gas saving motors GM ever produced.

  • Reliability (2)
    2 out of 5 stars
Known for frequent issues with intake manifold gaskets, cooling system failures, and the notoriously finicky Passlock security system.
  • Maintenance (4)
    4 out of 5 stars
Parts are incredibly abundant and inexpensive due to the high volume of GM production, making basic repairs budget-friendly.
  • Technology (2)
    2 out of 5 stars
Very dated by modern standards, featuring a basic AM/FM/CD player and standard analog gauges with minimal electronic driver aids.
  • Comfort (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
While the bucket seats are reasonably supportive, the interior is marred by an abundance of cheap, hard plastics and a cramped rear seating area.
  • Dynamics (3)
    3 out of 5 stars
The 3.4L V6 provides respectable torque for the era, but the front-wheel-drive platform suffers from noticeable body roll and vague steering feedback.

2004 Pontiac Grand Am

The 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was a popular compact car known for its sporty styling and performance-oriented options, targeting a younger demographic or those seeking a more engaging driving experience in the mainstream segment. It offered a blend of everyday practicality with a touch of attitude.

Highlights

  • Engine Options:
    • 2.2L Ecotec Inline-4: This standard engine provided a good balance of fuel efficiency and adequate power for daily driving, making it a practical choice for most buyers.
    • 3.4L 3400 V6: For those seeking more spirited performance, the optional V6 offered a noticeable increase in horsepower and torque, delivering quicker acceleration and a more engaging driving feel.
  • Safety Features:
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): Standard on most trims, ABS prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and reduce stopping distances on slippery surfaces.
    • Front and Side-Impact Airbags: These airbags were designed to deploy in specific impact scenarios, providing crucial protection for front occupants in frontal and side collisions.
    • Daytime Running Lights (DRLs): DRLs enhance visibility to other road users, particularly during daylight hours, contributing to overall safety.
  • Trim Level Summary:
    • SE: The entry-level trim, offering a solid value proposition with essential features for comfortable daily transportation.
    • GT: Positioned as the sportier option, the GT typically came standard with the more powerful V6 engine, sport-tuned suspension, and more aggressive styling cues, including unique wheels and body enhancements.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Sporty Styling: The Grand Am's exterior design, with its sharp lines and aggressive front fascia, set it apart from many of its more conservative competitors.
    • Comfortable Ride: While leaning towards sporty, the Grand Am still provided a reasonably comfortable ride for daily commuting and longer journeys.
    • User-Friendly Interior: The cabin was generally well-laid out with intuitive controls and comfortable seating.

What to Expect

Ownership of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am typically involves a straightforward experience, especially for models equipped with the Ecotec inline-4 engine. Maintenance is generally in line with other vehicles in its class, with regular oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements being key to longevity. The availability of parts is good due to its widespread production.

Insurance costs for the Grand Am are generally competitive, falling within the typical range for compact sedans and coupes. However, specific rates will vary based on your individual insurance provider, driving record, location, and chosen coverage levels. Models equipped with the V6 engine or the GT trim might see slightly higher premiums due to their performance-oriented nature.

Potential Considerations

While the 2004 Grand Am offered a compelling package, potential buyers should be aware of a few common considerations:

  • Interior Materials: Some of the interior plastics, while durable, might not feel as premium as those found in some newer or more luxury-oriented competitors.
  • Road Noise: Depending on the specific trim and tire choice, some road noise can penetrate the cabin, particularly at highway speeds.
  • Transmission Behavior (Automatic): In some instances, the automatic transmission could exhibit somewhat less refined shifts compared to more modern transmissions.
  • Cooling System Issues: Some owners have reported instances of cooling system leaks or component failures, particularly related to the intake manifold gasket on V6 models. Regular checks of the cooling system are advisable.
  • Headlight Haze: Like many vehicles of this era, the polycarbonate headlight lenses can become hazy or yellowed over time, affecting light output. Restoration or replacement might be necessary for optimal visibility.

Overall Summary

The 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was a commendable compact car that successfully blended sporty aesthetics with practical everyday usability. It offered a choice between an efficient four-cylinder and a more potent V6 engine, catering to a range of driver preferences. While not without its minor interior material and potential mechanical considerations, it provided a generally reliable and engaging ownership experience for those seeking a distinctive and spirited option in the compact segment.
