Tons of documentation & receipts
Clean Title

Here is a extremely well taken care of Laguna Seca e46 M3 example. This is a original Laguna car. This E46 is a clean title and has never been in a accident. The S54 motor is healthy and starts right up, there are no oil or coolant leaks.. the car is ready to get into and enjoy or keep as a collector item. The rod bearings & subframe has been done, I will have to look through the documentation to confirm if the vanos has been replaced as well. This is a original California car, which has made its way down to FL.. it is rust free and well taken care of throughout the years.
All components on the car work as should especially the AC which is ice cold! The laguna paint is in beautiful condition as you can tell from the photos. The M3 is a SMG transmission, yes I know the manual is more desirable, we do have connections with some phenomenal shops that can assist in a manual swap if that is what you prefer. The car does have a few modifications such as rear CSL carbon trunk which has been paint matched, BC coilovers & megan racing headers. The car drives like a dream and is close to being a flawless car!

2004 BMW M3

The 2004 BMW M3 represents the pinnacle of BMW's compact sports sedan and coupe offerings, a true driver's car celebrated for its exceptional performance, engaging handling, and sophisticated engineering. Based on the E46 chassis, this generation of the M3 is widely regarded as one of the best M cars ever produced, offering a compelling blend of everyday usability and exhilarating track-day capability.

Highlights

  • Engine:
    • S54B32 3.2-liter Naturally Aspirated Inline-Six: This legendary engine is the heart of the 2004 M3. It produces a potent 333 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Known for its incredibly smooth power delivery, razor-sharp throttle response, and a glorious redline of 8,000 RPM, the S54 is a masterpiece of internal combustion. Its individual throttle bodies provide an auditory and tactile experience unmatched by many modern turbocharged engines.
  • Safety Features:
    • Driver and Front Passenger Airbags: Standard front airbags deploy in a frontal collision to cushion occupants.
    • Side-Impact Airbags (Optional/Standard depending on body style): These airbags are integrated into the seats or doors, offering protection to the torso in side-impact collisions.
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): ABS prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and reducing stopping distances on most surfaces.
    • Traction Control (ASC+T - Automatic Stability Control + Traction): This system monitors wheel speed and engine output to prevent wheelspin during acceleration, enhancing stability and grip, especially in slippery conditions.
    • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) (Often paired with SMG transmission): A more advanced electronic stability control system that can intervene not only by reducing engine power but also by applying individual brakes to help the driver regain control in oversteer or understeer situations.
  • Trims:
    • BMW M3 Coupe: The iconic two-door fixed-roof version, offering a slightly more rigid chassis and a sportier aesthetic. This is the quintessential M3 experience for many enthusiasts.
    • BMW M3 Convertible: The open-top variant, providing the thrill of driving with the wind in your hair. While it shares the same potent powertrain, the convertible may have slightly less chassis rigidity and a touch more weight compared to the Coupe.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG II): The optional SMG II transmission offered a clutch pedal-less manual shifting experience, controllable via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters or the gear lever. It provided rapid gear changes and was a sophisticated technological offering for its time, though it can be a point of contention for purists compared to the standard manual.
    • Exceptional Handling and Steering: The M3 is renowned for its perfectly balanced chassis, communicative hydraulic power steering, and sophisticated multi-link suspension. It offers a sublime blend of ride comfort and aggressive cornering ability, making it a joy to drive on both winding roads and the racetrack.
    • Driver-Focused Interior: The cabin is designed with the driver in mind, featuring supportive sport seats, clear and legible instrumentation, and intuitive controls. The build quality is typically excellent for its era.
    • Iconic Design: The E46 M3 boasts timeless styling, with subtle yet purposeful aerodynamic enhancements that distinguish it from its standard 3 Series brethren.

What to Expect

Owning a 2004 BMW M3 is an experience that rewards passionate drivers. The typical ownership experience centers around the car's performance and the joy of driving. You can expect:

  • Engaging Driving Dynamics: The M3 delivers a connected and communicative driving experience. The feedback from the steering wheel and chassis is superb, making it feel alive and responsive.
  • Relatively Practicality: Despite its sporting credentials, the M3 is a usable daily driver. The coupe and convertible offer comfortable seating for four (though rear seat space is limited in the coupe) and a decent-sized trunk for everyday errands.
  • Maintenance: As a high-performance vehicle from this era, expect that maintenance will be more involved and potentially more expensive than a standard sedan. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brake pads, rotors, and suspension components are crucial to keeping the S54 engine and the car's chassis in top condition. The S54 engine, in particular, is known for its specific maintenance requirements.
  • Insurance: Insurance premiums for a 2004 BMW M3 will likely be higher than for a comparable non-M model, reflecting its performance capabilities, higher purchase price when new, and potential for spirited driving. Factors like your age, driving record, location, and chosen coverage will significantly impact the cost.

Potential Considerations

When considering a 2004 BMW M3, potential buyers should be aware of a few key points:

  • Rod Bearing Wear (S54 Engine): This is perhaps the most well-known and critical potential issue with the S54 engine. Due to the design, the rod bearings can wear prematurely, leading to potential engine failure if not addressed. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil and avoiding prolonged high-RPM operation from a cold start are recommended preventative measures. Many owners opt for proactive replacement of the rod bearings with upgraded units to mitigate this risk.
  • VANOS System: The Variable Valve Timing (VANOS) system can sometimes develop issues, leading to rough idling or performance loss. Repairing VANOS solenoids or associated components can be costly.
  • Subframe Mounts: The rear subframe mounting points on the E46 chassis are known to be a weak point, and under hard driving, they can crack. This requires professional repair, often involving reinforcing the area.
  • SMG Transmission: While sophisticated, the SMG II transmission can be expensive to repair if it develops issues. Furthermore, some enthusiasts prefer the feel of a traditional manual transmission.
  • Age-Related Wear: As a nearly 20-year-old vehicle, expect various age-related wear and tear items such as rubber bushings, hoses, and seals to require attention and replacement.

Overall Summary

The 2004 BMW M3 (E46) is a legendary sports car that continues to captivate enthusiasts with its raw performance, exceptional handling, and driver-centric design. Its naturally aspirated inline-six engine is a masterpiece, delivering an unforgettable driving experience. While it demands diligent maintenance and potential buyers should be aware of specific S54 engine considerations, the rewards of owning and driving this iconic M car are immense. For those seeking a pure, analog driving machine that can also function as a capable daily driver, the 2004 M3 remains a highly desirable and celebrated automobile.
