Highlights

2.5L five-cylinder TD5 “Storm” turbo-diesel with a five-speed manual
An absolute survivor, clean and rust free thanks to Italy's dry climate
97,679 miles - that's less than 4,000 miles per year!

Somewhere between heritage and the perfect tool for today’s problems is this 2001 Land Rover Defender 90, carrying one of the most desirable drivetrain combinations you could ask for in a 4x4 with its roots in the post-WWII era of Britain.

This 2001 is an example of decades of polishing the Land-Rover platform. It has the venerable TD5 2.5L turbo-diesel, which has that burly, agrarian engine note everyone wants out of a diesel while still being responsive and modestly quick in today’s traffic. 121 horsepower and 221 foot-pounds of torque won’t win races, but diesel torque comes on early in the RPM range while the turbo carries the horsepower curve out to 4,000rpm. Behind it is a five-speed manual that shifts smoothly around town and has the right gearing to cruise the highway competently.

Outside, this Defender still wears its factory Coniston Green (637) and Chawton White (603) two-tone paint, in large part thanks to living most of its life in Italy’s dry climate. With $8000 worth of recent maintenance completed, Car Cave knows this Defender is ready to hit the road running. With a complete dashboard R&R, including refurbishing the fog light switch, windshield wiper, headlights, and heater controls; restoring the rear fog defender and wiper blade; an oil change; fuel filter and air filter change; updating the radiator and cooling system; a complete brake refurbishment; a suspension refurbishment including front shocks, steering stabilizer, fulcrum joint, pitman arm, radius arm bushing, and alignment; and a complete detail. Car Cave also had a spare key made.

Despite its compact footprint, the Defender is a six-person vehicle, with two buckets up front and a pair of folding bench seats in back, riding under Land-Rover’s signature safari windows. Unique to these machines too are the cowl vents under the windshield that bring fresh air in through the dash, flipping open like the gadget panels on R2-D2 to scoop up a refreshing breeze.

If you’re new to classic vehicles, but don’t want to live with the quirks and unrefined nature of those prehistoric machines, this Defender mixes the right ingredients between its old world looks and contemporary driving experience. Additionally, with our expertise in Land Rover powertrains, talk to us about our Stage I, Stage II, or Stage III performance packages that bump up horsepower and torque by approximately 50% - making one of these a practically unbeatable package for their size, capability and efficiency. Car Cave sources well kept examples without the typical rust and rot found in most Defenders. We then go through a complete maintenance regime and extensive test drive (sometimes over 2000 miles.)

Introduced after the dust settled around Rover’s Salihull, UK factory – the same factory that churned out tho
