1997 Cadillac Sedan Deville d'Elegance Cadillac introduces the new Deville, the spirited DeVille Concours, and the classic luxury of DeVille d'Elegance. With comforts and conveniences that recharge you. World class safety and security features that reassure you. And Northstar performance and control that energize you. Life has been good. But with DeVille, the best is yet to come. From the 1997 Cadillac sales brochure.  For consignment, a 1997 Cadillac Sedan DeVille d'Elegance with a title verified 37,735 actual miles. Here's a stunning example of the pinnacle of the GM line in 1997 and the sales brochure occupies many pages touting the still relatively new Northstar series. Exterior Class on wheels, this Cadillac is dressed in a coat of two stage Dark Adriatic Blue paint and this example has an enormous presence and we're not just talking about dimensions. Spectacular paint is sharply contrasted by the bright body side molding that runs end to end, breaking only for the 16-inch chrome wheels. Up front, clear headlights sit flush outside of a prominent eggcrate grille while in back, blue remains king with the exception of the thing, vertical tail lights, chrome topped bumper, and sizable reverse lights. The mock convertible canvas top is stunning and houses a sunroof and an embroidered gold Cadillac crest on the C-pillars. Gold is also used to trim emblems, molding, the hood ornament and is the color of the side pinstripe. Imperfections are limited to some water staining on the hood, an outward ding on the trunk lid, scuffs on the rear bumper cover, various scratches, and spots throughout the side molding and rear trim clear coat. Interior Soft blue surfaces on the doors are accented with glossy woodgrain insert trim as the header and along with switchgear, carpeted lowers, and courtesy lights, all four doors present in excellent condition. They open up to blue leather bucket seats in front, soft and subtle and showing some minimal patina on the driver's side with compression and a touch of wear, while passenger and rear bench show nicely and center armrests are provided front and rear. The band of wood continues almost seamlessly across the wide dashboard where greenlit digital readouts fill a black screen in front the steering wheel and a simple Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio is embedded in the center. The blue carpet is toes deep plush and there's plenty of it for rear passengers as well. Our headliner and overhead console are just about showroom condition and the trunk will fit just about anything you can throw at it, holding it in its gray cloth paneled and clean environment.  Drivetrain The flat floors inside are made possible by the transverse 4.6 liter Northstar V8 under the hood, putting out 275 horsepower via fuel injection and keeping power up front through a 4T60E 4-speed automatic and 3.11 gears. The bay presents cleanly.   Undercarriage Driver quality conditions are found underneath with some surface and road soot on otherwise clean and dry surfaces. A single exhaust travels the length of the car and then splits to enter a pair of original equipment mufflers, terminating out of sight behind the rear bumper. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and independent suspension consists of Macpherson struts in front and coil springs in back.  Drive-AbilityI t's smooth sailing in this Adriatic Blue land yacht where comfort is king, and so are you behind the wheel! There's very good power under foot and small bumps are squelched under the soft suspension and cushy seats. The low refrigerant light is on on the dashboard and as a result, the A/C is not working, but all other functions in this low mileage example operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.  Cadillacs were a big part of the TV series The Sopranos and along with Tony's

1997 Cadillac DeVille: A Detailed Overview

The 1997 Cadillac DeVille represented a significant evolution for Cadillac's flagship sedan, blending traditional luxury with a refreshed design and improved technology. It aimed to appeal to a discerning clientele seeking comfort, smooth ride quality, and a stately presence.

Highlights

  • Engine: The DeVille was powered by a robust 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine. This sophisticated DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam) V8 was known for its smooth power delivery and respectable output for its era, typically producing around 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This provided ample power for effortless highway cruising and confident acceleration.
  • Safety Features: Cadillac prioritized safety in the 1997 DeVille. Key features included:
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): This system prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and reduce stopping distances on slippery surfaces.
    • Driver and Passenger Frontal Airbags: These airbags deploy in a frontal collision to cushion occupants and reduce the risk of head and chest injuries.
    • Optional Side-Impact Airbags: For enhanced protection in side-impact collisions, some models offered optional side airbags.
    • Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs): These lights are illuminated automatically when the engine is running, increasing the vehicle's visibility to other road users, especially in low-light conditions.
    • Automatic Headlamp Control (optional): This feature automatically turns the headlights on and off based on ambient light conditions, providing convenience and ensuring proper illumination.
  • Trims: The 1997 DeVille was offered in two primary, distinct trims, each offering a slightly different emphasis:
    • DEVILLE: This was the standard model, focusing on core Cadillac luxury, comfort, and performance. It offered a well-appointed interior and a smooth, refined driving experience.
    • DEVILLE CONCOURS: The Concours trim elevated the DeVille experience with a stronger emphasis on performance and enhanced luxury features. It typically included more powerful suspension tuning, premium interior materials, and additional comfort and convenience options as standard.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Tunable Suspension (optional): Select models offered a "Road Sensing Suspension" system that could adapt to changing road conditions, offering a balance between comfort and control.
    • Digital Dashboard: The DeVille featured a distinctive digital instrument cluster, a modern touch for its time, providing clear and easily readable information.
    • Quiet Cabin: Cadillac was renowned for its emphasis on interior quietness, and the 1997 DeVille was no exception, offering a serene and insulated passenger environment.
    • Front-Wheel Drive: The DeVille utilized a front-wheel-drive platform, contributing to its predictable handling and spacious interior.

What to Expect

Owning a 1997 Cadillac DeVille generally means experiencing a luxurious and comfortable ride. These vehicles were built for smooth highway cruising and providing a relaxing environment for occupants. Expect a soft, compliant suspension that absorbs road imperfections with ease. The cabin is typically quiet, with good insulation from road and wind noise.

  • Maintenance: As a luxury vehicle of its era, the DeVille's maintenance can be more costly than a mainstream sedan. The Northstar V8, while powerful, requires diligent oil changes and coolant checks to prevent potential issues like coolant leaks, especially around the head gaskets. Regular servicing of the suspension and braking systems is also important to maintain its ride quality and safety. Finding qualified mechanics familiar with Northstar engines is recommended.
  • Insurance: Insurance costs can vary significantly based on your driving record, location, and the specific coverage you choose. However, as a luxury sedan, it might carry slightly higher premiums compared to more common vehicles.

Potential Considerations

When considering a 1997 Cadillac DeVille, potential buyers should be aware of a few common points:

  • Coolant Leaks (Northstar Engine): While the Northstar V8 is a capable engine, some earlier models were known to be susceptible to coolant leaks, particularly around the head gaskets. Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial to address any potential leaks promptly.
  • Age-Related Wear: As with any vehicle of this vintage, expect some age-related wear and tear on interior components, such as leather seating, dashboard plastics, and electronic controls.
  • Electronic Systems: While generally reliable for their time, some of the DeVille's electronic features, like the climate control or infotainment systems, might develop quirks or cease functioning due to age.
  • Fuel Economy: The 4.6-liter V8, while smooth, is not the most fuel-efficient engine by modern standards. Expect mileage in the low to mid-20s on the highway, and lower in city driving.

Overall Summary

The 1997 Cadillac DeVille stands as a well-executed example of American luxury motoring from the late 1990s. It offers a compelling blend of a powerful yet smooth V8 engine, a serenely comfortable ride, and a suite of safety features for its time. While potential buyers should be mindful of the specific maintenance requirements of the Northstar engine and the general considerations of purchasing an older luxury vehicle, the DeVille remains a capable and stylish choice for those prioritizing comfort, refinement, and a dignified presence on the road.
