1987 Alfa Romeo Spider

The 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider, also known as the "Quadrifoglio Verde" or "Graduate" in some markets, represents a significant evolution in the long-standing Spider lineage, blending classic Italian styling with a more refined driving experience. For 1987, the Spider received a substantial update, most notably the introduction of Bosch electronic fuel injection, which brought improved performance, reliability, and fuel economy over its carbureted predecessors. This model year is often considered a sweet spot for enthusiasts seeking the timeless appeal of the classic Spider with the benefits of modern (for its time) technology.

Highlights

  • Engine: The heart of the 1987 Spider is the legendary Alfa Romeo 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four engine. For this model year, it was equipped with Bosch electronic fuel injection (EFI). This system delivered a more precise fuel-air mixture, resulting in smoother idling, improved throttle response, and a more consistent power delivery. The engine typically produced around 115-120 horsepower, ample for spirited driving through winding roads.
  • Safety Features:
    • Three-Point Seatbelts: Standard across the board, these are essential for occupant safety and provide a more secure seating position.
    • Collapsible Steering Column: Designed to absorb impact energy in a frontal collision, reducing the risk of chest injury to the driver.
    • Crumple Zones: The body structure was engineered with specific areas designed to deform in a controlled manner during an impact, absorbing kinetic energy away from the passenger cabin.
    • Side Impact Beams (in doors): These internal reinforcements within the doors help to resist intrusion from side impacts.
    • Power-Assisted Disc Brakes (Front & Rear): Providing strong and consistent stopping power, a crucial element for a sporty convertible.
  • Trims: While often referred to by their market-specific names, the core offering for 1987 was the single, well-equipped model, often distinguished by its fuel injection system. In some markets, specific packages or regional variants might exist, but the fundamental mechanical and styling elements remained consistent. The key differentiator was the performance and refinement brought by the EFI.
  • Other Notable Aspects:
    • Convertible Top: The iconic soft-top remains a defining feature. For 1987, the top mechanism was generally well-regarded for its ease of operation, allowing for quick deployment or retraction to enjoy open-air motoring.
    • Rear-Wheel Drive: The classic RWD layout contributes significantly to the Spider's agile and engaging handling characteristics, a hallmark of classic sports cars.
    • Suspension: The independent front suspension and live rear axle, combined with a well-tuned chassis, provided a balanced and communicative driving experience, making it a joy on twisty roads.
    • Italian Styling: The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is timeless and universally admired. Its clean lines, subtle curves, and distinctive front grille continue to exude classic Italian automotive charm.

What to Expect

Owning a 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider is an experience steeped in automotive passion. These cars are known for their engaging driving dynamics and the pure pleasure of open-top motoring. However, as with most classic Italian cars, expect a lifestyle that involves a certain level of commitment.

  • Typical Ownership Experience: You're buying a classic sports car. Expect it to draw attention and compliments wherever you go. The driving experience is raw and connected; you feel the road, the engine, and the wind. It's a car that encourages spirited drives on scenic routes rather than long, monotonous highway journeys. The convertible top operation is generally straightforward, but regular care and attention are necessary to keep it in good condition.
  • Maintenance: This is where commitment comes into play. While the fuel-injected engine is more reliable than its carbureted predecessors, regular and proactive maintenance is crucial. Alfa Romeo parts can sometimes be more expensive or harder to find than those for more common brands. Finding a mechanic experienced with older Alfas is highly recommended. Expect to perform routine tasks like oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks diligently. Suspect components like rubber hoses, belts, and bushings may need periodic replacement due to age. Electrical systems, while improved with EFI, can still be a source of quirks.
  • Insurance: Insuring a classic Italian sports car like the Alfa Romeo Spider typically requires specialized classic car insurance. This often involves agreeing to mileage restrictions and garaging the vehicle. Premiums can vary depending on your driving record, location, and the agreed-upon value of the car. It's essential to shop around for policies that cater to classic vehicles.

Potential Considerations

While the 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider is a desirable classic, potential buyers should be aware of certain common issues and characteristics.

  • Rust: Like many cars of this era, rust can be a significant concern. Pay close attention to the floor pans, rocker panels, wheel arches, and around the windshield and rear window seals. Thorough inspection for previous rust repair and current corrosion is vital.
  • Electrical Gremlins: While EFI improved reliability, older Alfas can still exhibit electrical quirks. Issues with wiring harnesses, switches, or the dashboard electronics can occur due to age and exposure.
  • Interior Wear: The cabin materials, particularly leather seats and carpets, can show wear and tear over time. Be prepared for potential refurbishment or replacement of interior components.
  • Convertible Top Seals: The seals around the convertible top and windows can degrade over time, leading to potential water leaks. Proper maintenance and occasional seal replacement can mitigate this.
  • Older Technology: While EFI was an upgrade, the car still utilizes older automotive technology. Features common in modern cars, such as advanced climate control, power windows (though some might have them), or extensive driver aids, will be absent.

Overall Summary

The 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider, particularly with its adoption of Bosch electronic fuel injection, represents a compelling proposition for those seeking the quintessential Italian roadster experience. It offers timeless Pininfarina styling, engaging rear-wheel-drive handling, and the pure joy of open-air motoring. While it demands a dedicated owner who understands and embraces the nuances of classic Italian car ownership, the rewards are significant. For enthusiasts who prioritize character, driving pleasure, and iconic design, the 1987 Spider remains a celebrated and cherished classic.
