Message from the seller

1982 Jeep Wagoneer Limited 4X4. Powered by the 360 AMC engine with a 4 BBL carb. The paint on this Jeep is amazingly slick. Dark Blue with all new trim and wood grain. This is a very clean underside as seen by the pictures. Over $20,000 was spent with the paint work, tires and all of the rest. It has twin power seats, windows, power rear glass, etc. I just put on 4 new 31-10-50-15 tires on 4 correct turbine wheels and center caps. No rust on this Wagoneer! Call 715-670-0209 for more information. It also has a new $250.00 hood ornament. This Jeep Wagoneer just reduced to only $29500.00. Phone 715-284-4525 or 715-299-4525.

1982 Jeep Wagoneer: A Legacy of Capability

The 1982 Jeep Wagoneer represents a pivotal moment for the iconic American brand, continuing its tradition of rugged utility wrapped in a surprisingly comfortable and versatile package. As the luxury sibling to the Jeep Cherokee, the Wagoneer offered a blend of off-road prowess and family-friendly amenities, making it a unique proposition in the automotive landscape of its time.

Highlights

The 1982 Wagoneer was built upon a foundation of proven Jeep engineering, offering a compelling package for those seeking adventure without sacrificing everyday usability.

  • Engine Options: The Wagoneer of this era primarily featured robust V8 engines, known for their torque and towing capabilities. The standard engine was typically a 360 cubic inch (5.9L) V8, providing ample power for both on-road cruising and tackling challenging terrain. Optional was the larger and more potent 401 cubic inch (6.6L) V8, offering even greater performance and towing capacity for those who needed it. These engines, while thirsty by modern standards, were known for their relative simplicity and durability.

  • Safety Features: While safety standards were less stringent in 1982, the Wagoneer offered some key features for its time:

    • Four-wheel drive (4WD): Standard on all Wagoneers, this was its defining safety feature, providing significantly enhanced traction and control in adverse weather conditions, on slippery surfaces, and during off-road excursions.
    • Heavy-duty frame and body construction: The Wagoneer was built with a robust body-on-frame design, contributing to its overall structural integrity and resilience.
    • Seat belts: Standard front and rear seat belts were present, a crucial safety advancement for the era.
    • Optional Power Brakes: While not always standard, power brakes were an available option, improving stopping power and reducing pedal effort.
  • Trim Summary: The 1982 Wagoneer was offered in distinct trims, each offering a step up in luxury and amenities:

    • Wagoneer: The base model still provided a well-equipped package with a comfortable interior and the core Jeep capabilities.
    • Wagoneer Limited: This premium trim elevated the experience with more luxurious interior appointments, such as upgraded upholstery (often leather or plush velour), woodgrain interior accents, enhanced sound insulation, and typically more standard features like air conditioning and power windows.
  • Other Notable Aspects:

    • Off-Road Prowess: True to its Jeep heritage, the Wagoneer boasted impressive off-road capabilities thanks to its robust 4WD system, good ground clearance, and solid axle suspension.
    • Towing Capacity: The V8 engines and sturdy construction made the Wagoneer an excellent vehicle for towing trailers, boats, or campers.
    • Spacious Interior: The Wagoneer offered generous passenger room, particularly in the front and rear seats, and a substantial cargo area, making it a practical choice for families and hauling gear.
    • Classic Styling: The Wagoneer's timeless, boxy design with its distinctive woodgrain paneling (on some trims) remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

What to Expect

Owning a 1982 Jeep Wagoneer is a journey back to a different era of motoring, characterized by mechanical simplicity and an emphasis on go-anywhere capability.

  • Typical Ownership Experience: Owners of a 1982 Wagoneer often report a strong emotional connection to their vehicle, appreciating its character and nostalgic appeal. They are typically enthusiasts who understand and embrace the vehicle's vintage nature. Expect a commanding driving position, a comfortable ride for its class, and a distinctive V8 rumble. The interior, especially in the Limited trim, can still feel quite plush and inviting. However, be prepared for a less refined driving experience compared to modern SUVs, with more body roll in corners and less precise steering.

  • Maintenance: Due to its age, regular and proactive maintenance is paramount.

    • Engine Maintenance: Regular oil changes, tune-ups (spark plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor), and fluid checks are essential for the V8 engines. Carburetor adjustments may be periodically needed.
    • Drivetrain: The 4WD system, including transfer cases and axles, requires regular lubrication and inspection. Grease points throughout the chassis will need attention.
    • Suspension and Brakes: Expect wear and tear on suspension components like bushings, ball joints, and shocks. Brake systems will also require ongoing maintenance.
    • Rust: This is a significant concern for any vehicle of this age, particularly in areas prone to road salt. Thorough inspections for frame rust, body panel rust, and suspension component corrosion are critical.
    • Availability of Parts: While many core components are still available, finding original or high-quality aftermarket parts for some specific items can become more challenging over time, especially for cosmetic or unique features.
  • Insurance: Insuring a 1982 Wagoneer will typically fall under classic or antique auto insurance policies.

    • Classic Car Insurance: This type of insurance often offers lower premiums than standard auto insurance, especially if the vehicle is kept in good condition and driven sparingly. It may require an appraisal and will likely have mileage restrictions.
    • Agreed Value: Policies are often based on an "agreed value" rather than "actual cash value," meaning you and the insurer agree on the vehicle's worth before the policy begins.

Potential Considerations

While the 1982 Wagoneer offers a unique blend of attributes, potential buyers should be aware of certain inherent drawbacks.

  • Fuel Economy: The V8 engines, coupled with the vehicle's weight and less aerodynamic design, result in significantly lower fuel economy by modern standards. Expect to visit the gas station frequently.
  • Emissions and Modern Regulations: Older vehicles may not meet current emissions standards in all regions, which could impact registration or usage in certain areas.
  • Technology and Features: Lacking modern amenities like advanced infotainment systems, navigation, power steering (though often available), and active safety features, the Wagoneer's technology is very basic by today's benchmarks.
  • Driving Dynamics: The ride can be somewhat truck-like, and handling is not as precise or refined as contemporary SUVs. Body roll in corners is noticeable.
  • Reliability of Age-Related Components: While the core drivetrain can be robust, components like rubber hoses, seals, electrical systems, and air conditioning (if equipped) are subject to age-related degradation and may require replacement.
  • Rust and Corrosion: As mentioned, the propensity for rust is a major concern, especially for vehicles that haven't been meticulously maintained or stored. Thorough inspections are crucial.

Overall Summary

The 1982 Jeep Wagoneer stands as a testament to Jeep's enduring legacy of building capable and desirable vehicles. It offers a compelling blend of off-road prowess, substantial towing ability, and a comfortable, spacious interior, all wrapped in a classic and iconic design. For enthusiasts and those seeking a vehicle with character and a connection to automotive history, the 1982 Wagoneer remains a highly rewarding choice. However, potential owners must be prepared for the realities of owning a vintage vehicle, including diligent maintenance, a thirst for fuel, and a driving experience that prioritizes ruggedness over modern refinement.
