Special THANKS to United Methodist Church of Salado on Royal Street for providing the BEAUTIFUL back drop for our photos. Many Blessings!

COMPLETELY RESTORED FROM THE GROUND UP

1978 Jeep CJ-5 4x4 w/origional 304 V-8, 3-spd Manual Transmission. This CJ was painstakingly disassemblemed down to the last nut and bolt, bead blasted, restored, primed, painted and reassembled with all new parts. Our selling price is FAR BELOW the cost of parts and labor to achieve this.

Come LOOK!! IT'S AWESOME!! LOT'S of POWER!!

Over a life span of nearly 30 years, the CJ-5 evolved and adapted, and it also moved from being marketed and sold as a utilitarian workhorse to something more akin to the modern SUV. Even so, the CJ-5 never lost the basic functionality that was at the root of its appeal and abilities, and this is why it still makes for a great addition to any classic car line-up. It's just so darned useful.

1978 Jeep CJ-5

The 1978 Jeep CJ-5 solidified its iconic status as a rugged, go-anywhere off-road vehicle, continuing the legacy of the Jeep brand. Building on decades of military and civilian Jeep development, the CJ-5 for this model year offered a blend of classic Jeep styling with incremental updates for functionality and driver comfort. It remained a favorite among off-road enthusiasts, adventurers, and those seeking a utilitarian, open-air experience.

Key Features and Innovations:

  • Chassis and Suspension: The CJ-5 retained its robust, body-on-frame construction, a hallmark of its durability. It featured a relatively short wheelbase for its time, contributing to its agile handling off-road and impressive approach and departure angles. The suspension system typically comprised leaf springs front and rear, providing a straightforward and resilient setup designed to absorb the rigors of rough terrain.

  • Engine Options: The 1978 CJ-5 offered a choice of engines to cater to different performance needs and budgets. The most common and highly regarded engine was the 304 cubic inch (5.0L) V8. This potent powerplant delivered ample torque for climbing and towing, making it a popular choice for serious off-roading. For those prioritizing fuel efficiency or a simpler powertrain, the 258 cubic inch (4.2L) inline-six was also available. While less powerful than the V8, the inline-six was known for its reliability and smooth operation.

  • Drivetrain: The standard configuration for the 1978 CJ-5 was a robust four-wheel-drive system. This system featured a manual transfer case, allowing drivers to select between 2-wheel drive (for highway use), 4-wheel drive high (for slippery conditions), and 4-wheel drive low (for extreme crawling and steep inclines). Transmission options typically included a three-speed automatic or a four-speed manual transmission.

  • Body Style and Design: The exterior of the 1978 CJ-5 was unmistakably Jeep, characterized by its rounded fenders, upright grille with seven vertical slots, and prominent circular headlights. The body was constructed from steel, emphasizing its utilitarian nature. The CJ-5 was offered in various open-top configurations, including the popular CJ-5 Universal (often referred to as the standard soft-top model) and potentially limited-run variations or dealer-installed packages. The iconic Jeep CJ-5 windshield could be folded down, further enhancing the open-air, back-to-basics driving experience.

  • Interior: The interior of the 1978 CJ-5 was decidedly spartan and functional. Designed for practicality, it featured durable vinyl or fabric seats, a simple dashboard with essential gauges (speedometer, fuel level, oil pressure, temperature), and a basic radio. Creature comforts were minimal, reflecting the CJ-5's focus on off-road capability rather than luxury. The gear shifter, transfer case lever, and parking brake were centrally located, providing straightforward access for the driver.

  • Off-Road Prowess: The 1978 CJ-5 was engineered with off-road capability as its primary objective. Its short wheelbase, high ground clearance, and excellent suspension articulation allowed it to traverse challenging terrain with ease. The selectable four-wheel-drive system, combined with a low range transfer case, provided the necessary traction and leverage for steep climbs and technical obstacles.

  • Target Audience: The CJ-5 appealed to a wide range of individuals. It was a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts, campers, hunters, and farmers who needed a dependable vehicle for traversing rough terrain. Furthermore, its timeless design and approachable nature made it a favorite for recreational off-roading and a canvas for customization and modification.

Legacy:

The 1978 Jeep CJ-5 represents a pivotal point in the evolution of the CJ series. It continued to embody the spirit of adventure and ruggedness that defined the Jeep brand. While later models would see further refinements and the eventual introduction of the CJ-7 with its longer wheelbase, the 1978 CJ-5 remains a highly sought-after classic for its unadulterated Jeep experience, its impressive off-road capabilities, and its enduring connection to a legendary automotive heritage.
