VIN – THPNNE06893 MILEAGE 57203 Restored WWW COLLECTORMOTORS COM The De Tomaso Pantera is a mid-engine sports car produced by Italian automobile manufacturer De Tomaso from 1971 to 1993 In motor racing, the safety of the driver depends on the car body which must meet stringent regulations and only a few cars have ever been built with monocoque structures. An aluminum alloy monocoque chassis was first used in the 1962 Lotus 25 Formula 1 race car. The Pantera's chassis was of a steel monocoque design, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. 1973 IMPORT CAR OF THE YEAR They were sold through Mercury Dealers, from 1971-1974 They were 0-60 in under six seconds in the 1974 product. They were a 14 second quarter mile. Ironically, they were built for handling and to compete against the Italian Giants! Top end speed of 159mph! Mid-engine design from Ford Ford and Ghia Joint Venture, Tjaarda & Dallara Great info can be found on these cars at - http://www.panteraplace.com We purchased our first Pantera in 2004. It was Gary Wilson’s GT5, which was the first Pantera in the Hall of Fame. We were hooked…. this vehicle was purchased in June of 2006. At that time, we considered her in great condition, she was our third Pantera. Originally, she was Cortez silver (see Marti Report), somewhere in the late 70’s early 80’s she was completely disassembled and painted Maltone (orange -#20R498). The files that will come with car date back to the original owner and give a complete historical vehicle documentation. In the past few years the price of these cars has jumped, due to rarity, and standard transmissions on Italian cars. In 2018, we decided to put the car on the market. We looked at the overall condition of this car. She was the perfect candidate for our restoration project. Time (14 months) and money (over $70,000), plus the cost of the car, we are now ready for market… The biggest parts of the project were, drivetrain rebuild, Lusso impact bumper(comes with car) to Gossamer Split nose bumper conversion, complete insulation/heat shield of cockpit and engine compartment and rewire and rebuild light assembly. Here are the shop notes of what we did, a bit choppy, but you will be able to follow. Remove engine and transaxle. Disassemble motor and inspect for wear. We found flat lobes on the camshaft and cylinder wall tapper with worn main and rod bearings. We sent engine out to machine shop. We rebuilt with OEM Bore and had the crankshaft turned. We reassembled engine with a Q code camshaft. We installed new Center-force flywheel and clutch assembly. Replaced a/c compressor, receiver, dryer and condenser. Rebuilt the carburetor Replaced the alternator and voltage regulator. Replaced the rear wheel bearings and rear upper and lower control arm bushings. Replaced half-shaft bolts. Replaced coolant expansion tank and hoses. Replaced front wheel bearings and seals. Replaced front upper and lower control arm bushings. Replaced upper and lower ball joints and outer tie rods. Replaced front and rear brake pa

1974 De Tomaso Pantera: A Fiery Finale

The 1974 De Tomaso Pantera marked the culmination of a unique era for the Italian-American supercar. Designed by the legendary Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, the Pantera, a mid-engined two-seater sports car, was born from a desire to blend Italian styling flair with American muscle car power. While the Pantera's journey began in 1971, the 1974 model year represents a significant, albeit brief, chapter, particularly in its American market history.

A Bit of History:

The Pantera project was initiated by Alejandro De Tomaso, an Argentinean entrepreneur with a passion for motorsport and a vision for a high-performance GT. The original Pantera was built by De Tomaso Automobili, an Italian company that had previously produced models like the Mangusta. Crucially, De Tomaso had a partnership with Ford, which supplied the powerful V8 engines. This partnership, particularly with Ford's North American operations, was instrumental in bringing the Pantera to the US market.

The 1974 Model Year: A Tale of Two Markets and Changing Regulations:

The 1974 model year is characterized by a significant shift in the Pantera's presence, primarily due to evolving emissions regulations in the United States.

  • US Market - The Decline and Fall: The 1974 Pantera for the North American market was intended to be a continuation of the successful formula. However, the stringent new emissions standards introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proved to be a formidable challenge for the powerful Ford 351 Cleveland V8 engine. To meet these regulations, Ford engineers made significant modifications to the engine, including the introduction of a catalytic converter and a less aggressive camshaft. This resulted in a noticeable decrease in horsepower and torque compared to earlier models. Furthermore, the bumpers were also redesigned to meet federal impact regulations, becoming larger and more protruding, which some enthusiasts felt detracted from the car's sleek Italian aesthetics. Production for the US market was limited, and by the end of 1974, the Pantera was effectively withdrawn from North America due to the inability to meet the ever-tightening emissions standards without significant compromises to performance.

  • European and Other Markets: While the US market saw its Pantera chapter closing, the car continued to be produced and sold in other parts of the world, albeit with different specifications. These models often retained the more potent versions of the Ford V8 engine (such as the 351 Windsor or even the larger 400 Cleveland in some later European models) and did not feature the cumbersome US-spec safety bumpers or catalytic converters. These European-spec Panteras often represented the purest expression of the car's performance potential.

Key Features and Design:

Regardless of the market, the 1974 Pantera shared many of the defining characteristics that made it a standout:

  • Mid-Engine Layout: The heart of the Pantera was its Ford V8 engine, mounted longitudinally behind the driver and passenger, a layout that provided excellent weight distribution and handling dynamics.
  • Exotic Styling: The body, penned by Ghia, was a masterpiece of wedge-shaped Italian design. Low, wide, and aggressive, it featured sharp lines, pop-up headlights (on earlier models, though some later versions saw fixed headlights), and a distinctive glass engine cover that showcased the V8 powerhouse.
  • Ford V8 Power: The engine choice, a Ford V8, was a deliberate strategy to provide robust, reliable, and accessible power. In its earlier iterations, this engine delivered exhilarating performance, making the Pantera a genuine supercar.
  • Luxurious Interior (for its time): The cabin was designed to be a comfortable place for two occupants, often featuring leather upholstery, a well-appointed dashboard, and a functional, albeit somewhat driver-focused, layout.
  • Rack-and-Pinion Steering and Independent Suspension: The Pantera boasted modern engineering for its era, including rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel independent suspension, contributing to its agile handling.

Legacy:

The 1974 De Tomaso Pantera is a significant year because it represents the twilight of the Pantera's run in its most important market, the United States. While the US-spec models faced compromises due to regulations, they still offered a unique blend of exotic Italian styling and potent American V8 power that was rarely seen. The European versions continued to embody the raw performance and aggressive styling that made the Pantera a cult classic. Today, the 1974 Pantera, especially in its more original, non-US-regulated forms, is highly sought after by collectors who appreciate its audacious design, thrilling performance, and its place as a true icon of the supercar era. It stands as a testament to Alejandro De Tomaso's ambitious vision and a reminder of the challenges faced by high-performance vehicles in an era of increasing environmental awareness.
