Concourse winner, 1 of 212 made! Ultra-low production car here, it is said that only 212 1969 F-85s with the W-31 performance package were made. This one is #'s matching and features a 4-speed manual transmission increasing its rarity and desirability! On top of that it has received a top quality, frame off rotisserie restoration that will absolutely blow your mind! It received 983 out of 1000 possible points while being judged at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals and 994 at the Olds Nationals. It has been meticulously kept since. Really, this is one of the finest cars I've had in a long time. Fit, finishes and function is amazing! The original owner's manual, protect-o-plate and warranty pamphlet with salesman's card stapled to it are included. This car's history: Bill Austin, a salesman at Farnsworth Oldsmobile in Plainwell MI, was a drag racing enthusiast. In the summer of 1969, he special ordered this no frills, stripped down F-85 with the W-31 performance package. A gentleman named William Cool walked in the showroom and fell in love with this car. On July 7th, 1969, he was its new proud owner. He owned it until 1984 when Stephen Hanner, an Olds enthusiast talked Mr. Cool into selling him the car. Mr. Hanner owned it until 2008 when Mr. Bakanec bought the car and started the concourse restoration. I happen to know Mr. Bakanec from my days being a member of the Olds club, he has done some top-notch restorations on some rare 442s. In 2010 it was purchased by a gentleman and he finished the restoration, had it judged and kept meticulous care of the car. Now it's your turn to be a part of this car's history! EXTERIOR: The exterior of this car is something special! The quality of the paint and body work is tremendous! The crimson red paint is spotless and applied with expert precision. It was painstakingly wet sanded and polished to a mirror like finish. The black W-31 stripes have been applied under the clear coat and are completely smooth to the touch. Additionally, this is the factory correct paint color. Looking down the side of the body is absolutely 100% laser straight with no discrepancies noted. All the panels have been aligned properly and the doors, hood, and trunk all open and close easily. All the glass is new, and it is blemish free. The front grill looks like new. All the trim pieces including the front and rear bumper have been rechromed or replaced and have a beautiful shine to them. The body-colored rims with poverty hubcaps really give this Olds a sleeper appearance. Upfront they are wearing reproduction G70-14 Goodyear polyglass tires, in back it has a set of much needed Mickey Thompson street slicks. This exterior is absolutely immaculate and will please even the fussiest collectors! INTERIOR: Wow! Can you say new? Everything about this interior looks brand new and dare I say, perfect condition. Like the exterior it is no frills although it has 1 very special feature: a Hurst shifter sticking out of the floor. The front bench seat has been reupholstered and leaves you plenty of room to cuddle with your sweetheart. Both the front and rear seats have new cushions as well and are very comfortable. The door panels have also been replaced and are spotless. The carpeting and kick panels are new. The headliner, sun visors, seat belts, and rearview mirror have all been replaced. The dome light is working. The dash pad has been replaced and the climate control along with all the knobs look like new. There is a radio delete. The gauges appear to be original but in fantastic condition. The steering column and wheel both look new as well. A vintage Sun Super tachometer has been added to the steering column and a SunPro triple gauge has been added under the dash. This is arguably one of the most pristine interiors that we have at the museum currently! ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Under the hood is a rare sight indeed! The original #'s matching W-31 350 Ram Air engine! Originally, they pumped out an impressive 325

1969 Oldsmobile F-85: A Capable and Comfortable Mid-Size Option

The 1969 Oldsmobile F-85 represented a compelling choice within General Motors' mid-size A-body lineup, offering a blend of Oldsmobile's signature style, comfortable interiors, and capable performance. While often overshadowed by its more performance-oriented Cutlass siblings, the F-85 held its own as a practical and appealing option for buyers seeking a well-appointed and reliable automobile.

Design and Styling: Refined and Mature

For 1969, the F-85 shared its body shell with other GM A-bodies, but Oldsmobile injected its distinct styling cues. The overall design was a refinement of the previous year's model, featuring clean lines and a substantial presence.

  • Front End: The F-85 typically sported a prominent grille, often with horizontal bars and a central Oldsmobile crest, flanked by dual headlights. The bumper was integrated smoothly into the overall design.
  • Side Profile: The body was characterized by a flowing, yet muscular, profile. Styling elements like fender lines and chrome trim contributed to its upscale appearance. Body styles included a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a versatile station wagon (often designated as the Vista Cruiser for its glass roof panel).
  • Rear End: The taillights were a key design element, often extending across the rear of the vehicle, a common feature for GM cars of this era. The trunk lid and bumper completed the rear fascia.

The F-85's styling was generally perceived as more mature and less aggressive than some of its competitors, appealing to buyers who favored a sophisticated aesthetic.

Interior Comfort and Appointments: A Focus on Practical Luxury

Oldsmobile's reputation for comfortable and well-appointed interiors was evident in the F-85. The cabin was designed to be spacious and inviting, making it a pleasant place for daily driving and longer journeys.

  • Seating: Bench seats were standard, offering ample space for passengers. Upholstery options typically included durable and attractive vinyl or cloth combinations. Bucket seats might have been an option on certain trims.
  • Dashboard and Controls: The dashboard featured a straightforward layout with clear instrumentation. Gauges for speed, fuel, and temperature were prominently displayed. Control placement was logical, prioritizing ease of use.
  • Features: Depending on the trim level and optional equipment, the F-85 could be equipped with features like a heater/defroster, AM radio, power steering, and power brakes, enhancing both comfort and convenience. The optional air conditioning would have provided significant comfort during warmer months.

The F-85 aimed to provide a comfortable and functional interior that felt a step above basic transportation.

Powertrain and Performance: Balanced and Capable

The F-85 offered a range of engine options that provided a good balance of power and fuel efficiency for its class. While not a performance flagship, it was more than capable of confident highway cruising and responsive acceleration.

  • Standard Engines: Base models typically came with a reliable inline-six engine, offering decent everyday performance and good economy.
  • V8 Options: The F-85 was available with a selection of Oldsmobile V8 engines, most notably the 350 cubic inch Rocket V8. This engine provided a significant boost in power and torque, making the F-85 a more spirited performer. Higher-performance variants of the 350 might have been offered, and in some years, larger V8s could have been available, although the 350 was the mainstay.
  • Transmission: A three-speed manual transmission was likely standard, with the reliable Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission being a popular and highly recommended option for its smooth operation and ease of use.
  • Chassis and Suspension: The F-85 utilized a body-on-frame construction, a common setup for cars of this era. Its suspension was tuned for a comfortable ride, absorbing road imperfections effectively. Power steering was a widely adopted option, greatly improving maneuverability.

The F-85's powertrain choices catered to a broad spectrum of drivers, from those prioritizing economy to those seeking a more potent driving experience.

Model Variants and Positioning: The Accessible Oldsmobile

Within the Oldsmobile lineup, the F-85 occupied a position below the Cutlass models. This often meant it was offered at a more accessible price point, making it an attractive entry into the Oldsmobile brand.

  • Body Styles: The availability of two-door coupes, four-door sedans, and station wagons provided versatility to meet various consumer needs.
  • Trim Levels: While the F-85 was the base designation, there could have been sub-trims or optional packages that allowed for further customization and enhancement of features and appearance.

The 1969 Oldsmobile F-85 stood as a well-rounded and attractive mid-size automobile. It successfully blended Oldsmobile's reputation for quality and comfort with a handsome design and capable performance, making it a sensible and enjoyable choice for a wide range of buyers in the late 1960s.
