Sold new by Dutch Miller Chevrolet and Huntington West Virginia and spent its entire life there. The Chevelle SS became a regular series of its own in 1966 and was known as the SS 396 with its own line of engines and performance equipment. For the 1969 model, the SS 396 series was dropped and the super sport became a performance option. In 1969, the SS option could be ordered on the base model two door offerings as well as the Malibu two door sport coupe, convertible, and El Camino. However, 1969 SS option cars included the three 96402 as the base engine, keeping the option alive as a performance oriented choice. Further options were naturally available for the truly performance oriented, and one of these was the line order L 89, The code for the aluminum cylinder heads.
