1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Hardtop Mid size madness afflicted the Dodge lineup for 1967 and began to roll out what became known as the 1968-1969 Dodge Coronet R/T and Super Bee Models, which included a 440 Magnum engine. As the name suggests, the new mill displaced a whopping 440 cubic inches -- this in a car that was typically thought of as supermarket and vacation transportation. Dodge wasn't about to let Pontiac's GTO and other muscle car rivals pull ahead in the marketplace, so the R/T package carried on when Coronets earned their 1968 restyling. Auto.howstuffworks.com For consignment, a 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T hardtop showing 5,073 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was purchased by our consignor in 1973 and at some point tucked away while dimes were saved for a future restoration. That restoration took place over a period of years and was completed in 2011. It retains a date-correct 440 and A727 Torqueflite transmission.  Exterior Objectively some of the best looking muscle cars to come out of the era, Mopar's B-bodies are represented well by this R/T, showing in stunning two stage Medium Blue Metallic paint perfectly offset by the white vinyl roof and you don't need binoculars to see the interior will also carry white, but we'll get to that. A laser straight shoulder line leads to a flat deck lid and a reward at the very end in the form of a strobe like configuration to the rear tail lights and reverse lamps kept vibrant in the middle of the latch panel with ornamental vertical trim lines. And what would muscle be without two large exhaust tips under a straight, chrome bumper? Up front, the strait laced fascia places quad headlights in a black grated grille over a chrome bumper with air gaps and amber turn signals.  Cragar SS wheels look ideal at each corner. Imperfections include scratches and chips throughout, some minor blistering, and some deglazing on a rear window.  Interior A Coronet R/T badge tops the white door panels exhibiting a series of horizontal design lines and polished trim and both doors are in great shape. From there, we peer upon the white bucket seats with ornamental buttons that were in vogue at the time, and nice white vinyl that presents in nice condition. A sharp contrast is found looking forward as the steering wheel and complete dash are black, even the faces of the six gauges. There's a metal horn ring, robust toggles, and the center console is also metal, a ribbed pattern that surrounds the shifter. An AM/FM/CD player brings things a little closer to modern times but everything else is vintage '68. Black carpet and R/T mats below, a perforated white headliner above, and a plaid cover in the trunk that tops some surface rust on the metal floor.   Drivetrain An MSD distributor and adherent red wires catch your eye, along with braided hoses and finned valve covers of this 440ci V8 with a 1967 casting and assembly date, now with an Edelbrock intake and Demon 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by an A727 3-speed automatic transmission with an assembly date one day after the engine, August 31, 1967, which routes power to the 8 ¾ axle with 3.23 gears and SureGrip. The bay is clean and show ready! Power steering, power brakes and headers are noted.  Undercarriage Not as showy as the engine, but certainly clean underneath where the dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers and then work their way to the square polished tips. Power brakes are distributed as front disc and rear drum and suspension consists of torsion bars in front and leaf springs in back. The knuckles are clear and the underside is almost completely free of surface rust. Drive-Ability Mopar fans rejoice! This R/T looks and sounds amazing, and the test drive is on par with the condition, providing plenty of grunt, straight tracking, and braking on demand. This is pumping iron the old school way and all of the functions available operate as intended and it's off to find a showroom spot for thi
