1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme: A Refined Step Up

The 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme represented a significant evolution for the popular Cutlass line, offering a more luxurious and sophisticated experience within the intermediate segment. Building upon the success of its predecessors, the '67 Supreme aimed to capture buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped car without venturing into the full-size luxury market.

Design and Styling:

The 1967 Cutlass Supreme shared its basic body shell with other Cutlass models, but it was distinguished by its more upscale trim and detailing. The front featured a clean and prominent grille, with quad headlights flanking a central Oldsmobile emblem. The side profile was characterized by clean lines and a well-proportioned silhouette. The Supreme model typically boasted a vinyl roof as standard or a popular option, further enhancing its luxurious appearance. Chrome accents were used judiciously, appearing on the grille, window surrounds, side trim, and bumpers. The rear of the car featured distinctive taillights, often integrated into the bumper or positioned on the rear decklid, a hallmark of Oldsmobile design of the era.

Body Styles:

The Cutlass Supreme was primarily offered in two highly sought-after body styles for 1967:

  • 2-Door Hardtop Coupe: This was the quintessential representation of the Supreme, offering a sleek, pillarless design that exuded sporty elegance. It was the most popular choice for those seeking a stylish personal coupe.
  • 4-Door Hardtop Sedan: For buyers needing more practicality, the four-door hardtop sedan provided the same upscale features and styling in a more family-friendly package. Its pillarless door design maintained a clean, flowing line.

Powertrain and Performance:

The 1967 Cutlass Supreme offered a range of V8 engines, catering to different performance and economy preferences:

  • Standard V8: Typically, a 330 cubic inch (5.4L) V8 served as the base engine, providing ample power for everyday driving. This engine often produced around 250 horsepower.
  • Optional V8s: Buyers could opt for larger and more powerful V8 engines, including the 400 cubic inch (6.5L) Rocket V8. These larger engines offered increased horsepower and torque, contributing to a more spirited driving experience.

Transmission options generally included:

  • 3-Speed Manual: A standard offering, though less common on Supreme models.
  • 2-Speed Automatic (Powerglide): A popular and smooth-shifting automatic transmission.
  • 3-Speed Automatic (Turbo Hydra-Matic): Available with larger V8 engines, this transmission provided more gears for better performance and fuel efficiency.

Interior and Features:

The "Supreme" designation truly came into its own within the interior. The 1967 Cutlass Supreme offered a more refined and comfortable cabin compared to its standard Cutlass siblings. Key interior features often included:

  • Bench or Bucket Seats: While bench seats were common, bucket seats were often available, enhancing the sporty feel.
  • Deluxe Interior Appointments: This could include higher-quality upholstery materials (often cloth and vinyl combinations), woodgrain or simulated woodgrain trim on the dashboard and door panels, and more padded surfaces.
  • Upgraded Instrument Panel: The dashboard typically featured a more comprehensive and stylish instrument cluster, with clear gauges for speed, fuel, oil pressure, and temperature.
  • Optional Amenities: Buyers could enhance their Supreme with a range of optional features such as air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, an AM/FM radio, a tilt steering wheel, and cruise control, all contributing to a more luxurious and convenient driving experience.

Market Position and Legacy:

The 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme occupied a strong position in the growing intermediate market. It appealed to a broad demographic, from younger buyers seeking a stylish and sporty coupe to families desiring a comfortable and well-appointed sedan. Its blend of attractive styling, comfortable interior, and respectable V8 performance made it a compelling choice. The '67 Supreme is remembered as a well-executed example of American automotive design and engineering from the mid-1960s, a car that successfully delivered a taste of luxury without the prohibitive cost of larger, more opulent vehicles.
