Message from the seller

This low-mileage, highly original 1966 Chevrolet Corvette L72 427 Convertible is a rare find. With only 42,222 miles on the odometer and finished in what is believed to be its original Ermine White paint, this car is special. Period modifications include a blue full-length painted center stripe and the addition of two extra tail lights for a total six, which was a popular customization when these cars were new. Factory optional side-mounted exhaust and knock-off wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich Silvertown Redline tires add to this rare Corvette's allure. The black interior appears to be original as well, with the exception of correct replacement carpets, modern retro radio and wood steering wheel. The factory telescopic column helps and make this Stingray comfortable to operate. Additionally, this Corvette is optioned with a factory auxiliary removable hardtop, as well as a folding soft convertible top. Debuting for the 1966 model year, Chevrolet's L72 427 V-8 was a force to be reckoned with. Officially rated at 425 horsepower, its 11.0:1 compression, solid-lifter cam, forged crank, free-flowing rectangular-port cylinder heads, and virtually bulletproof block allowed for a number closer to 450 horsepower, making this one of the most potent engines used by an American automaker in the 1960s. Developed from a series of special Mark IV engines, field-tested by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team, it was used in Don Yenko's famed Super Camaros and Super Chevelles, and they formed the basis of the GM-built COPO Camaro in 1969. It was especially potent when dropped into the relatively lightweight Corvette. With 42,222 miles, believed actual, this car is accessorized with a potent, highly-desirable, numbers-matching L72 V-8, as well as numbers-matching Muncie M-21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, positraction rear axle, F41 special suspension, vacuum power disc brakes, and upgraded HEI ignition system. A full engine rebuild was performed by County Corvette in Pennsylvania, that included bored .030 over, new pistons, hydraulic roller cam, and a new radiator. Engine bay looks largely authentic and period correct with painted valve covers, Winters aluminum intake, Holley carburetor and correct hose clamps. 1966 Chevrolet Corvette: A Refined Icon of American Performance

The 1966 Chevrolet Corvette marked a significant evolution for Chevrolet's flagship sports car, building upon the dramatic Sting Ray redesign of the previous year. While retaining the aggressive and undeniably beautiful C2 Sting Ray body style, the '66 model year introduced a host of refinements and performance enhancements that solidified its reputation as a true American automotive icon.

Key Design and Styling Updates:

  • The Shark-Like Profile Persists: The iconic split-window design from 1963 was gone, replaced by a more conventional, albeit still striking, single-pane rear window. This change offered improved rearward visibility and a cleaner aesthetic. The overall "Sting Ray" styling, with its sharp creases, hidden headlights, and aggressive, low-slung profile, remained the defining visual element.
  • Frontal Revisions: The front fascia saw subtle but impactful changes. The simulated grille opening was widened, and the "teeth" were slightly more pronounced. The parking lamps were also repositioned to be slightly lower and more integrated into the lower front grille area.
  • Interior Refinements: The interior received attention with improved seat comfort and a more driver-focused cockpit. While still retaining the sporty and functional layout, there was a general upgrade in materials and ergonomics, reflecting the Corvette's growing maturity as a premium sports car.
  • New Wheel Covers: While optional alloy wheels were available, the standard wheel covers received a new design for 1966, adding another subtle visual distinction.

Powertrain Advancements: A Focus on Power

The 1966 Corvette offered a significant leap in powertrain options, catering to a wider range of performance desires:

  • The Big-Block Arrives: The 427 CID V8: The most significant mechanical introduction for 1966 was the much-anticipated L36 427 cubic inch V8 engine. This powerhouse, producing a formidable 390 horsepower, transformed the Corvette into a genuine supercar contender. It was a torque-rich engine, providing immense low-end grunt and exhilarating acceleration.
  • Enhanced Small-Blocks: For those who preferred the nimbler feel of the small-block V8, Chevrolet offered several potent options:
    • 327 CID V8 (L79): This high-performance small-block was a popular choice, delivering a healthy 350 horsepower and offering a fantastic balance of power and handling.
    • 327 CID V8 (L30): The standard 327 V8 produced 300 horsepower, providing respectable performance for everyday driving and spirited cruising.
  • Transmission Choices: Buyers could choose between a smooth-shifting three-speed manual transmission or the more engaging four-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission was also available for those prioritizing comfort, though the manual transmissions were generally favored by performance enthusiasts.

Handling and Chassis Improvements:

  • Stiffer Chassis: Chevrolet made the chassis even more robust for 1966, improving rigidity and further enhancing the Corvette's handling characteristics.
  • Improved Suspension: Subtle refinements to the independent suspension system contributed to a more planted and responsive feel, allowing drivers to exploit the Corvette's power with greater confidence.
  • Disc Brakes Standard: Four-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment, providing crucial stopping power to match the increased engine performance. This was a significant safety and performance advantage for the era.

Notable Options and Features:

  • Convertible and Coupe Body Styles: The 1966 Corvette was available in both the iconic Sting Ray Convertible and the sleek Sting Ray Coupe body styles.
  • Air Conditioning: For the first time, air conditioning was a widely sought-after option, making the Corvette a more comfortable proposition for warmer climates.
  • Power Steering and Power Brakes: These options enhanced driver comfort and ease of control.
  • AM/FM Radio: A more premium audio experience was available with the optional AM/FM radio.
  • Side Exhausts: While not as visually prominent as some previous years, optional side-mounted exhaust pipes were available, adding a distinctive touch and a throaty rumble.

Legacy and Significance:

The 1966 Chevrolet Corvette stands as a pivotal model in the C2 generation. It successfully blended breathtaking styling with a significant increase in raw performance, particularly with the introduction of the legendary 427 V8. This year marked the Corvette's firm establishment as a serious contender in the global sports car market, offering a compelling package of American muscle, sophisticated design, and exhilarating driving dynamics that continues to captivate enthusiasts today.
