1965 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia -investor grade restoration We have owned lots of cars through the past years (1974-current -500+) They are all beautiful in their own ways. Several vehicles stand out as icons, but there are those that are unique and timeless whether from the beginning in early 1900’s to the latest greatest for what they are. This vehicle is one of them. Here is some info about this car before we tell you about this ours. >1 in 42 (about 500k vs. 2.1mil beetles) -19 years virtually unchanged in the build. Welded body not just bolted together like most cars. >The Karmann Ghia, is considered a design milestone and it is now part of the permanent collection of New York's museum of Modern Art. >it was designed by Italian automotive design firm Ghia (which was known for designing higher-end, sportier cars like Alfa Romeos, Fiats, even Ferraris) and manufactured by German coach builder Karmann. As opposed to the automated Henry-Ford-style assembly lines on which the Beetles were built, the Karmann Ghia was a monocoque (unibody, no detachable fenders) design that was built by hand by experienced craftspeople. All the separate parts of the Karmann Ghia body were welded together by hand, and seams were filled with a pewter body filler. This is a method that's typically reserved for higher-end cars as this method takes more time and as a result is more expensive. http://www.karmannghiaconnection.com/Construction.html >the beauty of the Karmann-Ghia was that it offered a beautiful, elegant, stylish and slightly sporty-looking body with completely reliable mechanicals. Definitely a "have your cake and eat it too" situation of style plus down-to-earth substance. It signaled your friends and neighbors that you've arrived, or that you were a bit of a bon vivant, without losing your grip on reality. It was one of those rare consumer items which offered an unusually high ratio of beauty to cost, without sacrificing quality or reliability. How could one not fall in love with this little car? The styling of the KG, integrated work by Segre as well as Mario Boano, Sergio Coggiola and Giovanni Savonuzzi — and at various times they each took credit for the design.[10] Furthermore, the design bore striking styling similarities to Virgil Exner's Chrysler D'Elegance and K-310 concepts, which Ghia had been tasked with prototyping — and which in turn reflected numerous cues and themes developed previously by Mario Boano.[5] According to Virgil Exner's son, Virgil M. Exner Jr., Giovanni Savonuzzi was tasked with scaling down the full-sized d’Elegance, replacing "the Chrysler’s egg-crate grille with a gentle, boat-like prow.[11] Exner Jr. is further quoted as saying that the Karmann Ghia "was a direct, intentional swipe off the Chrysler D'Elegance. Giovanni Savonuzzi was the engineer and designer who downsized the D'Elegance and made the Karmann Ghia out of it. Nobody minded it. It was wonderful." The Italians had a field day with design in years past. Now let us tell you about this gem. Easily museum level restoration. With-extras….…. The car has four-thousand-dollar stereo system – amazing sound! Look through the pictures, call us if you have questions. Newly black powder-coated wheels. This car was built to a level that most couldn’t imagine and those that understand would appreciate. Call us with questions. Collectormotors.com 281.530.6000
