THE CAR IS RUNNING ON THE CENTER CARB. THIS IS BEYOND MY CAPABILITIES. IT ALSO HAS THE FACTORY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND IT SHIFTS GREAT. THE BRAKES ARE HIGH AND WORK VERY WELL. THE FRONT SHOCKS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE BODY AND PAINT ARE IN GREAT SHAPE. THE PAINT WAS DONE IN A 2 STAGE PAINT BY A PROFESSIONAL SHOP AND IT SHOWS THAT. THE ARE A COUPLE SCRATCHES HERE AND THERE BUT NOTHING MAJOR. IT ALSO DOES NOT HAVE ANY DENTS. THERE IS NO VISIBLE BODY FILLER AND BEING A LARGER CAR THERE ARE NO WAVES DOWN THE SIDES. 1963 Pontiac Catalina: A Stylish and Sporty Full-Size

The 1963 Pontiac Catalina represented a significant evolution for Pontiac's popular full-size offering. Building on the success of its predecessors, the Catalina in 1963 showcased a refreshed, more sophisticated styling package, a host of mechanical refinements, and continued to embody Pontiac's image as a brand offering performance and panache in a practical, everyday package. This year marked a subtle yet important step in the ongoing development of Pontiac's distinctive "Wide-Track" philosophy.

    Styling and Design:

Pontiac's design team under the direction of Bill Porter delivered a more refined and elegant look for the 1963 Catalina. While retaining the overall proportions of the previous year, the styling was softened and made more contemporary.

    • Front End: The signature "split grille" remained, but it was now more integrated and less aggressive. The grilles were narrower and set deeper into the bodywork, giving a sleeker appearance. The headlights were still quad units, but their housings were redesigned for a cleaner look. The bumper was a more substantial, full-width unit, often incorporating parking lights.
    • Side Profile: The sharp character lines of earlier models were somewhat softened. The crease running along the beltline was still present but less pronounced. The Catalina was available in several body styles, including a two-door hardtop (often referred to as the "Sport Coupe"), a four-door hardtop, and a four-door sedan. The hardtop models, with their pillarless windows, were particularly popular for their open-air feel and sporty aesthetic.
    • Rear End: The taillights were redesigned and often featured a more horizontal arrangement, contributing to the car's wider stance. The rear bumper was also restyled to complement the updated front.
    • Interior: The interior offered a comfortable and well-appointed cabin, befitting a full-size car of the era. Upholstery options ranged from durable cloth to luxurious vinyl and leather. The dashboard was functional and stylish, with clear instrumentation and ample space.

    Powertrain and Performance:

The 1963 Catalina continued to be powered by Pontiac's renowned V8 engines, offering a range of performance options to cater to different driver preferences. The "Wide-Track" chassis, a hallmark of Pontiac, ensured excellent handling for a car of its size.

    • Standard Engine: The base engine was typically a 326 cubic inch V8, offering respectable power for daily driving.
    • Optional Engines: For those seeking more performance, Pontiac offered larger V8s, including:
      • 389 V8: Available in various states of tune, from a mild 210 horsepower to a more potent 303 horsepower with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust.
      • 425A V8: A larger displacement engine that provided even greater power and torque.
    • Transmissions: Buyers could choose from a three-speed manual transmission (column or floor shift), a two-speed "Super Hydra-Matic" automatic transmission, or the more desirable three-speed "Roto Hydra-Matic" automatic transmission, which offered smoother shifts and better performance.
    • Suspension and Handling: The Catalina's reputation for good handling was enhanced by Pontiac's "Wide-Track" suspension system, which provided a wider track width than many competitors, contributing to improved stability and cornering ability.

    Trim Levels and Notable Features:

While the Catalina was Pontiac's mainstream full-size offering, it still offered a good level of standard equipment and optional amenities.

    • Standard Features: Typically included bench seating, a heater, fresh air vents, and a basic radio.
    • Optional Features: A wide array of optional equipment allowed buyers to personalize their Catalina, such as:
      • Power steering and power brakes for improved driver comfort and control.
      • Air conditioning for climate control.
      • Bucket seats and a center console for a sportier feel (often associated with the "Catalina Sports Coupe" or as an option on other models).
      • Upgraded radios and speaker systems.
      • Electric clock.
      • Cruise control (a relatively new and premium feature at the time).
      • Various exterior trim and wheel cover options.

    Legacy and Significance:

The 1963 Pontiac Catalina stands as a testament to Pontiac's successful formula of combining stylish design with strong V8 performance. It was a popular choice for families and individuals who desired a full-size car that was both comfortable and engaging to drive. The refinements made to the styling and the continued emphasis on performance ensured that the Catalina remained a strong competitor in the highly contested full-size automobile market of the early 1960s. Today, well-maintained examples are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate their blend of classic American styling and V8 prowess.
