1962 Buick Special

The 1962 Buick Special represented a significant evolution for Buick's compact offering, building upon the success of its groundbreaking debut in 1961. While retaining its compact footprint, the '62 model year saw a refinement of its styling, a boost in performance, and the introduction of new body styles, cementing its place as a stylish and capable American car.

Styling and Design:

The 1962 Special presented a cleaner and more sophisticated appearance than its predecessor. Gone were some of the more flamboyant styling cues, replaced by a more mature and integrated design.

  • Front End: The signature Buick V-shaped grille remained, but it was subtly redesigned with a finer mesh and cleaner lines. Headlights were still housed in distinct pods, but their integration into the overall front fascia was smoother. The bumper was more elegantly styled, often with integrated turn signals.
  • Side Profile: The sharp character lines of the 1961 model were softened, resulting in a more flowing and balanced profile. Chrome trim was used judiciously, accentuating the body lines and window surrounds. The distinctive "sweep spear" design was still present but often less pronounced.
  • Rear End: The taillights were typically horizontal and integrated into the rear panel, offering a modern look. The rear bumper was similarly refined.
  • Body Styles: The 1962 lineup expanded to include a wider array of body styles, catering to different consumer needs and preferences:
    • 2-door Sedan: A classic pillarless hardtop coupe.
    • 4-door Sedan: A practical four-door option.
    • Station Wagon (Skylark Wagon): Building on the success of the 1961 wagon, this versatile model offered ample cargo space with the characteristic Buick flair.
    • Convertible: For those seeking open-air motoring, the convertible offered a stylish and enjoyable experience.

Powertrain and Performance:

The defining mechanical feature of the 1962 Buick Special was its innovative all-aluminum V8 engine. This lightweight and powerful unit was a technological marvel for its time and a key selling point.

  • Engine: The primary engine offered was the 215 cubic inch (3.5-liter) all-aluminum V8. This compact yet potent engine was available in two states of tune:
    • Standard: Producing around 155 horsepower.
    • Optional High Compression/Higher Output: Often rated at 165 horsepower, offering a bit more pep.
    • The aluminum construction contributed to the Special's excellent power-to-weight ratio and, consequently, its agile handling and respectable fuel economy.
  • Transmission: Buyers had a choice between:
    • 2-speed "Twin-Turbine" Dynaflow Automatic: Buick's signature smooth-shifting automatic transmission, known for its effortless operation.
    • 3-speed Manual Transmission: A more driver-engaging option for those who preferred manual shifting.
  • Suspension and Handling: The Special featured a robust independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. This setup provided a comfortable ride characteristic of Buicks, while the compact size and relatively light weight contributed to surprisingly capable handling for a car of its era.

Interior and Features:

The interior of the 1962 Buick Special reflected Buick's reputation for quality and comfort, even in its compact offering.

  • Seating: Typically offered with bench seats in both the front and rear, providing comfortable seating for up to six occupants. Higher trim levels, like the Skylark, might have featured more luxurious upholstery options.
  • Dashboard and Instrumentation: The dashboard was well-laid out and featured a comprehensive array of instruments, including a speedometer, fuel gauge, and oil pressure gauge. Buick's signature "Dual-Scope" dashboard was often present, offering a clear and uncluttered view of information.
  • Optional Equipment: A range of optional features enhanced the comfort and convenience of the Special, including:
    • Power Steering: A welcome addition for easier maneuverability.
    • Power Brakes: Improving stopping power and reducing driver effort.
    • Air Conditioning: A sought-after luxury for the era, providing a cool and comfortable cabin.
    • Radio: AM radio was standard, with optional AM/FM radios available.
    • Whitewall Tires: A popular styling choice that added to the car's premium look.

Market Position and Legacy:

The 1962 Buick Special was positioned as a stylish, comfortable, and capable compact car that offered a touch of Buick luxury without the larger size and price of its bigger siblings. It competed in a growing compact car segment, vying for market share against offerings from Ford, Chevrolet, and other domestic manufacturers.

The 1962 Buick Special is remembered as a successful refinement of an already innovative concept. Its advanced aluminum V8 engine, refined styling, and comfortable interior made it a compelling choice for buyers seeking a compact car with a premium feel. It contributed significantly to Buick's strong sales performance in the early 1960s and remains a beloved classic among collectors and enthusiasts for its blend of performance, style, and engineering ingenuity.
