All vehicle trades considered including classics and performance. We can assist with financing and shipping as needed. This 1960 Coupe de Ville is a great classic with the look and ride that helped distinguish the Cadillac brand. It has a presence you can feel whether driving down the highway or just parked at cars and coffee. And while it makes quite a scene from the outside, it also makes an impression from the inside where it offers a very comfortable ride complete with cold air conditioning. Showing just under 40k miles, this rust-free example spent most of its life in Texas. It has been refinished in its original Oxford White which seems the perfect color for this model. The lavish front grille is a beautiful piece by itself, but the pronounced rear end with its stately fins is even more impressive. All the trim pieces are in good shape from front to back; note this can be a huge expense on these old Cadillacs. The wire wheels and wide whitewall tires look magnificent and are a must-have on any Coupe de Ville. The engine is Cadillac’s 390 cubic inch V8 with a factory rating of 325 hp and in impressive 425 ft-lb of torque. Behind this sits a robust 4-speed Hydramatic transmission which was the best of its day, even being used in army tanks. The power brakes have remarkable stopping power and use immense brake drums. Similarly, the power steering lets you turn the wheel of this massive car with just a finger. It’s everything you’d expect from a 1960’s Cadillac. There is a lot to talk about inside as well. It starts with the original code 40 black Cambray cloth and white leather upholstery which is still in good condition after 66 years - a testament to material quality and proper care. The door panels and headliner are also impressive as are the steering wheel and instrument panel. The air conditioning has been converted to R134a and was recently serviced with a new compressor, bypass valve, receiver, and more. The wipers, washers, horn, heater/defroster, power seat, and power windows all work properly. Other functional features include the fender turn signals and a signal seeking radio with power antenna. There is nothing like riding in one of these big classic Cadillacs, especially when they look and drive like this one. And with all the lookalike vehicles around us today, it makes an even bigger statement now than it did in 1960.

The 1960 Cadillac DeVille: Pinnacle of Post-War American Luxury

The 1960 Cadillac DeVille represented a definitive moment in automotive design and luxury, embodying the aspirational spirit and technological advancements of post-war America. While often seen as a natural evolution of its predecessors, the 1960 model year introduced subtle yet significant refinements that cemented its status as a desirable and iconic vehicle. It was a car that didn't just transport its occupants; it announced their arrival, exuding an aura of prestige, comfort, and cutting-edge style.

Design and Styling: A Masterpiece of Tailfins and Chrome

The 1960 DeVille continued the signature Cadillac aesthetic, albeit with a more refined and less ostentatious approach compared to some earlier fins-of-the-late-50s. The prominent, yet elegantly sculpted, tailfins remained a defining characteristic, now more integrated into the overall body lines, lending a sleek and aerodynamic appearance. These fins, often described as "razor-edge," pointed towards the future while referencing the jet-age enthusiasm of the preceding decade.

  • Front Fascia: The front end featured a distinctive grille with a horizontal emphasis, a prominent chrome bumper, and dual headlights, which were becoming increasingly standard. The overall impression was one of dignified presence and commanding road presence.
  • Body Lines: The body was characterized by clean, flowing lines, a long hood, and a spacious cabin. The convertible models, in particular, showcased a striking profile with their tops down, epitomizing the freedom and optimism of the era.
  • Chrome Accents: Generous use of chrome trim was a hallmark of Cadillac, and the 1960 DeVille was no exception. Chrome adorned the bumpers, grille, side moldings, window surrounds, and wheel covers, adding a dazzling sparkle and reinforcing the car's luxurious character.
  • Color Palettes: Available in a wide array of sophisticated and vibrant colors, customers could personalize their DeVille to reflect their individual tastes.

Powertrain and Performance: Effortless Power and Smooth Cruising

Underneath its elegant exterior, the 1960 DeVille was powered by a robust V8 engine, designed to deliver effortless performance and a remarkably smooth ride.

  • Engine: The standard engine for the DeVille was a powerful 365 cubic inch V8, producing ample horsepower for confident acceleration and highway cruising.
  • Transmission: The Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was a marvel of engineering for its time, providing seamless gear changes and contributing to the DeVille's renowned comfort.
  • Suspension: Cadillac's sophisticated suspension system, often featuring air suspension as an option, absorbed road imperfections with remarkable efficiency, creating a ride quality that felt almost cloud-like. This focus on comfort made the DeVille an ideal vehicle for long-distance journeys.

Interior and Features: A Haven of Comfort and Convenience

The interior of the 1960 DeVille was a testament to luxury and meticulous craftsmanship, designed to be a sanctuary for its occupants.

  • Seating: Plush, spacious seating upholstered in high-quality fabrics or optional leather offered unparalleled comfort. The bench seats provided ample room for six passengers.
  • Instrumentation: The dashboard was elegantly designed, featuring a clear and legible array of gauges, often with a distinctive "sweep-hand" speedometer.
  • Amenities: Cadillac was at the forefront of automotive innovation, and the 1960 DeVille offered a range of luxurious features for its time:
    • Power steering and power brakes were standard, making the large car easy to maneuver.
    • Power windows and power seats were often included or available as options, further enhancing convenience.
    • Air conditioning, a premium feature, was increasingly sought after, providing climate control for all-season comfort.
    • An AM radio, and often a push-button AM/FM radio, provided in-car entertainment.
    • Optional features like power door locks, cruise control, and tinted glass added to the car's premium appeal.

Legacy and Significance: An Icon of American Optimism

The 1960 Cadillac DeVille remains a highly collectible and admired automobile today. It represents a period of unbridled optimism, technological advancement, and a distinct American style that captivated the world. Its blend of striking design, powerful performance, and unparalleled luxury solidified Cadillac's reputation as the ultimate symbol of American automotive excellence. For many, the 1960 DeVille is not just a car; it's a tangible piece of history, a reminder of a bygone era of grandeur and aspiration.
