1958 Buick Special Estate Wagon - This rare Buick Estate Wagon came in a while back as a partial trade-in. We didn't know much about at these Estate Wagons at the time but we knew we loved its looks. On top of the rarity (1 of only 3,663), it has a killer patina paint job that only mother nature could create over the last 67 years. It was missing a few pieces of chrome which we successfully located and installed. The luggage rack is a rare option and this one is still in excellent condition. You probably can't see in photos but there is a small windshield crack but the previous owner gave us a brand new windshield that will accompany this sale. The interior had seen better days so the decision was made to re-do just about all of it. The seats, carpet, headliner, dash pad, door panels, and wall panels are all new. We then tuned up the engine and the brakes, added a brand new set of thick white walls, and hand-sealed the body with Sweet Patina brand protectant. This beauty now turns a tons of heads and is ready for weekend cruises. Our future thoughts if she doesn't sell soon are to possibly upgrade to a modern drivetrain, brakes, and a/c. But, we thought we'd go ahead and offer her for sale in the current restoration level and let the new caretaker make those decisions. Current features and options include; 364ci Fireball V8/300hp 4bbl, Auto, Luggage Rack, Chrome Grille/Mirrors/Bumpers, Rubber Floormats, Power Steering/Brakes, Factory Sonomatic Stereo, Tinted Glass, Tire Tools, 15" Factory Hubcaps, and New 225/75 R15 3" Wide Whitewall Tires! Load up the whole family and arrive at your next local car show in style!! Additional photos and similar vehicles at *** www.TXCLSX.com ***

1958 Buick Estate Wagon: A Spacious and Stylish American Dream

The 1958 Buick Estate Wagon stands as a testament to American automotive design and aspiration of the late 1950s. Positioned as a premium family hauler, it offered a unique blend of spacious practicality, luxurious appointments, and distinctive styling that set it apart from its contemporaries. This full-size station wagon was the epitome of a family road trip machine, embodying comfort, versatility, and a touch of prestige.

Design and Styling:

Buick's styling for 1958 was characterized by a refinement of the brand's established identity, with the Estate Wagon receiving its fair share of elegant touches. Key visual elements included:

  • Distinctive Grille: A prominent, polished metal grille, often featuring a bright, mesh-like pattern, dominated the front fascia, exuding an air of sophistication.
  • "Sweepspear" Styling: While not as pronounced as on some other Buick models, subtle hints of the brand's signature "sweepspear" design could be found in the body lines, adding a dynamic flair.
  • "Dagmars" and Chrome: The front bumper, typically a substantial chrome unit, often incorporated the distinctive "Dagmar" bumper guards, a common styling cue of the era that added visual weight and protection. Extensive use of chrome trim adorned the windows, door handles, side moldings, and rear tailgate, further enhancing its upscale appearance.
  • Woodgrain Paneling (Optional/Standard): A hallmark of the Estate Wagon's identity was its simulated woodgrain paneling on the rear sides and tailgate. This iconic feature, achieved through intricate decal application, evoked the charm of older wooden station wagons while providing a luxurious and distinctive aesthetic.
  • Large Panoramic Windshield and Windows: Generous glass areas, including a panoramic windshield, contributed to excellent visibility and an airy, open cabin feel.
  • Rear Tailgate: The tailgate was a multi-piece affair, often featuring a folding rear window and a drop-down tailgate for easy loading and unloading of cargo.

Powertrain and Performance:

Underneath its stylish exterior, the 1958 Buick Estate Wagon was powered by Buick's robust V8 engines, designed to provide effortless cruising and ample power for its size.

  • Engine Options: While specific engine options varied, the Estate Wagon was typically equipped with Buick's large displacement V8s, most notably the 364 cubic inch "Nailhead" V8. This engine was renowned for its torque and smooth operation, making it ideal for long-distance driving.
  • Transmission: The standard transmission was Buick's "Dynaflow" automatic transmission. This torque converter automatic was celebrated for its exceptionally smooth, "no-shift" feel, contributing to a comfortable and luxurious ride.
  • Suspension and Ride: The Estate Wagon featured a comfortable, coil-spring suspension system that provided a plush ride, soaking up road imperfections with ease. This focus on comfort was a key selling point for Buick.

Interior and Features:

The interior of the 1958 Buick Estate Wagon was designed to pamper its occupants, offering a high level of comfort and convenience for its time.

  • Spacious Seating: With seating for six or even more passengers, the Estate Wagon was built for family adventures. The rear-facing third-row seat was a common feature, maximizing passenger capacity.
  • Premium Upholstery: The cabin was appointed with quality materials, typically featuring durable yet comfortable cloth or vinyl upholstery. Options for leather could also be found on higher trim levels or as dealer upgrades.
  • Ample Cargo Space: The primary purpose of a station wagon, the Estate Wagon boasted a cavernous cargo area that could be expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it incredibly versatile for carrying luggage, groceries, or equipment.
  • Dashboard and Instrumentation: The dashboard featured a driver-oriented layout with a comprehensive array of gauges and controls. Chrome accents and stylish dashboard designs further enhanced the upscale feel.
  • Comfort and Convenience Features: Buyers could opt for features like power steering, power brakes, power windows, and an air conditioning system (a luxury item in 1958), further elevating the driving and passenger experience.

Legacy and Collectibility:

The 1958 Buick Estate Wagon is a significant piece of automotive history, representing a pinnacle of American family car design. Today, these wagons are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their:

  • Distinctive Styling: The unique woodgrain accents and bold Buick styling remain enduringly attractive.
  • Nostalgia Factor: They evoke a sense of nostalgia for the golden age of American motoring and family road trips.
  • Versatility and Practicality: Even by today's standards, their spacious interiors and cargo capacity are impressive.
  • Comfortable Cruising: The Dynaflow transmission and smooth V8 engines make them enjoyable to drive.

While often overshadowed by more overtly sporty cars of the era, the 1958 Buick Estate Wagon carved out a distinct niche as a stylish, comfortable, and practical vehicle that perfectly captured the optimism and aspirations of mid-century America. It remains a cherished classic, embodying the spirit of adventure and family togetherness.
