Message from the seller

1955 Lincoln Capri. The exterior is a gorgeous Porsche red with custom fiberglass skirts, dummy pipes, frenched in double power antennas and wide whitewall tires with chrome baby moon caps to complete the look. The original car roof has been removed and replaced with one from a 1964 Ford Galaxy. Under the hood is a 351 Windsor with lots of chrome, an aluminum radiator and electric fan (a must have if cruising Woodward Avenue). You'll also find some more custom fiberglass work under the hood. Opening the doors will reveal a recent upgrade of the interior with a buttery soft artificial leather in a light grey color along with a custom overhead console that lights up and a beautiful custom dash color matched to the exterior. To shift gears you'll find a B&M shifter, and when you need some fresh air you'll enjoy the modern luxury of power windows but can always open those vent windows to enjoy a nice breeze. You can enjoy listening to your favorite oldies music on the newer cd player. The trunk is finished with a light gray carpet and has plenty of room to store lawn chairs, your car cleaning supplies, coolers, snacks and lots more stuff - seriously this trunk is HUGE. On the exterior you'll see the name of the car 'Incog-neato' and that will all make perfect sense as car enthusiasts scratch their heads trying to decide what kind of car it is. The pictures don't do this car any justice and I can't tell you how many awards it won. If you plan on taking this for a cruise, allow yourself extra time because everyone will stop and admire it. We want to pass this car along to someone who will love it as much as we did. 1955 Lincoln Capri: A Pinnacle of Post-War American Style and Performance

The 1955 Lincoln Capri represented a significant evolution for Lincoln, a brand that had long strived to occupy the upper echelons of the American automotive market. Building upon the established foundation of the Capri nameplate, the 1955 model year saw a refined and more powerful iteration, embodying the optimistic spirit and burgeoning luxury of the mid-1950s. It was a car designed to impress, to project an image of success and sophistication, and to offer a compelling alternative to other premium marques of the era.

Design and Styling:

The 1955 Capri exuded a bold and distinctive style, characterized by its clean lines, expansive chrome detailing, and a generally more modern aesthetic than its predecessors. Key design elements included:

  • Front End: A prominent, wrap-around grille featuring a distinctive egg-crate pattern dominated the front fascia. Dual headlights, set within chrome bezels, contributed to its confident and somewhat imposing presence. The hood was long and sculpted, leading to a large, panoramic windshield that offered excellent visibility.
  • Profile: The side profile was defined by a smooth, flowing body with a subtle shoulder line. Chrome trim ran along the beltline, often accentuating the fender contours. The rear quarter panels were elegantly sculpted, and the overall impression was one of substantiality and elegance.
  • Rear End: The rear of the 1955 Capri was equally striking. Prominent, canted tailfins, a signature of 1950s American automotive design, added a touch of dynamism. These fins were often accented with chrome and featured integrated taillights. A wide, chrome-laden bumper and exhaust outlets, often integrated into the bumper, completed the rear ensemble.
  • Interior: Lincoln interiors of this era were synonymous with luxury and comfort. The 1955 Capri offered a spacious cabin appointed with high-quality materials. Plush seating, often upholstered in a combination of leather and fabric, was standard. The dashboard was a masterpiece of chrome and Bakelite, featuring a comprehensive array of gauges and controls. Options like power steering, power brakes, and power windows were readily available, further enhancing the upscale experience.

Engine and Performance:

The heart of the 1955 Lincoln Capri was its powerful V8 engine, significantly upgraded for this model year.

  • Engine: The Capri was powered by Lincoln's 290 cubic inch overhead-valve V8 engine. This engine was known for its smooth operation and substantial torque.
  • Horsepower: The 1955 model saw an increase in horsepower, typically rated at 185 horsepower. This provided ample power for effortless cruising and confident acceleration.
  • Transmission: The standard transmission was a three-speed "Turbo-Drive" automatic transmission. This advanced transmission offered smooth gear changes and contributed to the car's refined driving experience.
  • Chassis and Suspension: The Capri was built on a robust body-on-frame chassis, providing a solid and stable platform. The suspension system was tuned for a comfortable, plush ride, absorbing road imperfections with ease. This emphasis on ride comfort was a hallmark of Lincoln vehicles.

Key Features and Options:

The 1955 Lincoln Capri was a well-equipped automobile, but a range of optional extras allowed buyers to further personalize their vehicles and enhance their luxury quotient.

  • Power Steering: Standard on most models, contributing to easy maneuverability.
  • Power Brakes: Provided confident stopping power.
  • Power Windows: A luxury feature that added to driver and passenger convenience.
  • Power Seat: Allowed for easy adjustment of the driver's seat.
  • Air Conditioning: A highly desirable, albeit expensive, option that offered unparalleled comfort in warm climates.
  • AM Radio: A common feature, often with a stylish chrome speaker grille.
  • Whitewall Tires: A popular cosmetic upgrade that accentuated the car's elegant profile.
  • Fender Skirts: Optional at the rear, contributing to a sleeker, more streamlined appearance.
  • Two-Tone Paint Schemes: Many Capris were offered with attractive two-tone paint combinations, further enhancing their visual appeal.

Body Styles:

The 1955 Lincoln Capri was primarily offered in two body styles:

  • 2-Door Hardtop Coupe: The most iconic and popular model, epitomizing the sporty yet luxurious image of the Capri.
  • 4-Door Hardtop Sedan: Offering more practicality for families, while still retaining the Capri's distinctive styling cues.

Legacy:

The 1955 Lincoln Capri stands as a testament to American automotive design and engineering prowess in the mid-1950s. It was a car that successfully blended powerful performance with luxurious appointments and eye-catching styling, making it a desirable vehicle for those seeking an upscale and stylish mode of transportation. Its elegant lines and V8 power positioned it as a strong contender in the luxury car market, and today, it remains a beloved classic cherished by collectors and enthusiasts for its enduring style and its representation of a golden era in American automotive history.
