The 1947 MG TC sits at a pivotal moment in automotive history, bridging the gap between prewar British sports cars and the postwar performance boom that would follow. The TC was based on a 1930s design, with a narrow ladder frame, beam axles front and rear, and a lightweight open body with separate flowing fenders. Power came from MG’s trusty 1,250 cc XPAG inline-four, producing around 54 horsepower—modest on paper, but lively in a car weighing just over 1,800 pounds. Its four-speed manual gearbox and mechanical brakes were familiar, proven components rather than modern innovations. By 1947, exports to the U.S. were accelerating rapidly. The TC’s right-hand drive, lack of weather protection, and spartan interior didn’t deter buyers. Instead, its direct steering, open cockpit, and rev-happy engine felt thrilling compared to the heavy American sedans of the era. The TC effectively introduced the concept of the British sports car to America, laying the groundwork for decades of enthusiasm for MG, Triumph, Austin-Healey, and others. Today, a 1947 MG TC represents more than just a car—it symbolizes rebirth after war, the beginning of mass-market sports car enthusiasm, and the moment when British roadsters captured the imagination of the world. It remains one of the most historically significant MGs ever built. With a keen eye for classics, this MG TC was purchased in 1992 by none other than our local Imperial Motors, the North Shore's premier Jaguar dealer for over 60 years. Titled as a 1947 with a few later characteristics present, ie. body-colored bulkhead, red engine color, and central instrument panel painted metallic tan, indicating that the build was probably started in 1947 and concluded in '48. Handsome patina provides character to this collector's item, and allows for guilt-free driving!
